Title: Rear suspension knocking on Elite saloon
Post by: AdamBenn on 05 January 2010, 20:56:05
Hello folks.

About a month ago had some new rear shocks put on my 99 Elite saloon. These were the standard ones as opposed to the self levellers, so had the hoses tied off.

Anyway they seemed fine for about 2 weeks, and since then I notice the odd clunk/thud noise coming from the back left of the car. At first I thought it was something in the boot, but now it happens quite regularly. This only happens at low speeds and usually quite early on in the journey. Ride and handling seem OKish, although something doesn’t feel quite right about the back of the car.

Wondering if the springs have been affected by the new shocks, or maybe something else? Been having a bit of a read through some posts but not sure.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks all.

broken spring?
shocks leaking or failed(as my mv6 ones did with self level springs which are softer)
have the top shock mounts been assembled correctly?
is the top shock mount nut tight enough?

keep an eye on your shocks generally imho. self level shocks and springs are designed to work together. In theory there should be no problem with your current set up but stock shocks are designed to work stock spring, same with mv6 and self levelling items as said, should be fine but just keep an eye out for leaking oil on the shock body, which means they have failed.

mine made me think that but it was the hand brake retaning pin, one inside the drum, would check that aswell.
