Title: traction control and ICE
Post by: hoj on 07 January 2010, 18:34:46
On the slippery sufaces we are experiencing at the moment the traction control is working overtime but it is normal for the engine to seem like it is coughing and sluttering while the TC is working and the wheels are spinning

yes, it stops firing on 2 of the cylinders to reduce power, and hopefully get grip

Turn it off!!
Put it in drive and select the ice button and gentle on the throttle, in ice the TC is not so good as in the wet.

Hmm,  I would have said the same, turn the TC off and go easy.  however.....

Having to climb the hill to my house after my neighbour said that she could not get her golf up it, well I thought I was going to have fun.  Not a bit of it.  gentle throttle and let the TC do the rest and up it I went.  Really surprised

If it turn it off I can get on my inclined driveway much easier using winter mode on the gearbox, however once I'm moving, I knock it back on, as it's helpful once I've got some speed up  :y

to aid traction a couple of clicks on the handbrake helps, unless you have LSD already. Wide tyres and RWD do not make for grip in these awful conditions.

I've a manual so start in 2nd with TC on (once away from parked cars I turn it off for some fun). I also have 2 paving slabs in the boot which makes a big difference to the grip. Going up hills with the slabs in I tend to do better than front wheel drive cars!

I have two nice big gas tanks in my boot, I too have put many FWD cars to shame in the ice.  :y

i turn off the tc as i found it hindered me setting off also got 3 bags of gravel in the boot  :o that goes back to the good old bays of owning a mk 2 rs 2000  :y ive put most off my neighbours to shame even pulled one of there corsas out of the road on tuesday once im moving put tc back on as its easy to 360 the car if you get heavy with the throttle

i couldn't get in to our close and on to my drive yesterday, wheel spinning all over the place, and that was just with a tiny bit of throttle, i had to make 4 attempts to do so, the traction control was on i think, if the TC symbol is not lit up on the dashboard, does this mean its ON?
anyway, when the TC symbol was lit up after i pressed it, i got the car up with ZERO problems, bizarre?

what i have found even more weird this week is: rwd omega getting up inclines that fwd astra and focus did not without a push, and my 1989 escort no tc doing the best.  Narrow tyres maybe?

Probably more to do with driving technique to be honest. :(

The number of people who have no idea is absolutely amazing .. :(

I like many know that the standard of any brit on snow will be lower than a swede, but why cant we make the simple decision about a journey being ' necessary'... in other words is it worth putting your life at risk to do that journey. For driving technique we should all watch the footwork of rally drivers....truely amazing.    OH   agreed   technique mmmm  tooo many wheel spinners.  If it's spinning it aint gripping.

We all knew nothing once .. and from that point on we learn, usually with assistance from others .. but sometimes by experimentation ..  :)

The important thing is to learn ... if you survive the experimentation parts !!
