Title: Play in front wheel
Post by: TheBoy on 27 December 2009, 13:19:23
12 o'clock/6 o'clock, noticible play.

Wheel bearings?

Ask the boss to put her foot on the brake to see if it disappears, if it does then I would say wheel bearing ;)

Its only an easy 20 to 30 minute job and really easy to do :)

would tend to agree, but how much play? if its only "just" noticeable may be able to nip up the centre nut and sqeeeeze out the play. The masters tip ;).

I beleive they allow a small amount of play at mot time anyway. :y

As Pete says.

repeat 12/6 & 3/6 with Mrs TB's foot on the footbrake.

If the play goes away by an appreciable amount, its the wheel bearing.  If its the same, look for play in the suspension.

Straightforward play at the wheel without the footbrake test is pretty much meaningless and you risk mis diagnosis....   :y

Friends popped over yesterday, so couldn't check. I'll go out and get her to shove her foot onto brake today.

Anyone know a good supplier for them. Too expensive on TC.

Wheel bearings?

Got the same thing on N/S/F of my 'new' tractor ......
Holding the footbrake 'on' makes no difference, so I'll delve further in a day or two.
I'm wondering if the steering idler's at fault ...... Anyone?

Would expect steering idler play to be noticeable at 3-9 o'clock and barely there at 12-6, TBH.  :-/

Kevin

Play is at 3/9 not 12/6 - that's why I suspect the idler is at fault.

Yup, mine went at only 45k, confirmed by Tony from WIM using above method.

It comes with the whole hub, you can't change just the bearing  :(

I could not find pattern ones on on eBay, so I forked-out for original Vx (which turned-out to be Japanese anyway). They were not on TC at the time but the dealer let me have them for trade price which was then £70 each  :( :(

Not a huge job but you do need a torque wrench capable of 320NM...

Genuine GM is £96 + VAT.

Also need new trackrod end (NSF, nearest wheel). Any recommendations?

TB.. I thought we changed one of your hubs?

BIG spanner here when you are ready to fit it.

Yup, that same one has play back in it - that said I wouldn't mind a 2nd opinion on it, as not sure how much play is too much play.

Defo need to change that track rod end - makes sense to replace that after hub, to save removing it again, and potentially damaging new trackrod

No need to remove track rod to change the hub, just drop the caliper off, unbolt caliper bracket, remove disk then remove hub.

Its much quicker if you loosen the hub nut before jacking up the car and dismantling the brakes. ;D :(

The one we fitted was a good make...you been clouting curbs or something?

Quick job if you can get up here.

No curbing, but roads aren't well maintained around here. I'd also be lying if I said it hadn't seen any sideways action  :-[

I could have sworn yesterday that there was also play in the OSF hub, but not there today  :-/ - reckon I'm going slightly mad! ;D

Would it be the trackrod end be the reason why its a 'bit' wandery in a straight line?

Local factors.

when I needed one, Vaux couldnt get one in a few days, then not even a timescale, just 'backorder'  factors also 1/2 the price  :y

'Twas indeed the nearside (outer) tie-rod end!

Got one off the shelf from local factors for 15 quid all in.
Fitted now - just got to get the tracking accurately checked/reset ASAP.
