After BBQ'ing my original ECU I've been using the one off my '94 car, which shouldn't have worked at all, but is down on power.
I've now sourced an ECU with similar No's to my original, along with the key, ignition barrel, transponder and drivers door lock.
I tried just the ECU, but no start and a flashing EML.
I've only got one rather grubby key for the replacement ECU, but two keys for the car as it is now.
I've been advised by an ECU specialist that I should be able to change the ECU, remove the chip from the matching key and glue it to the transponder. Then both my original keys will work.
Do I need to use the replacement transponder with the chip and ECU, or will it work by just glueing the chip to my original transponder ?
Not entirely sold on this idea though, as it's not the most insurance friendly fix-it, so the jury's still out on this method.
I may go with swapping the chips over in the key as the rubber etc on my original key is in good condition.
How is the chip removed from the key ?

if the new ecu has same number on as old one should be fine if not may not read the sensors on the engine.

No issues with compatibility. Donor car is the same year and No.'s are similar. :y

Your key blade will pull apart from the remote section leaving a u shaped bit of plastic attached to the key blade and inside the U shaped bit of plastic is the small square chip which just pushes in. Replace your old ECU and transponder from around the ignition barrel with the new one and put the new chip in your old key :y

So I do need to swap the the transponder as well. :y
What about the spare key, can that be re-coded or something ?
Don't fancy having just the one key. That's why I was pondering over attaching the chip to the transponder and being able to use both keys.

As said, swapping the transponder will get one key up and running. You can pair your other existing key to the ECU if you can get to someone with a Tech 2. Then you'll have a spare.
No need to change locks but you will need to fit the immobiliser module from the new ECU.

Wasn't too keen on sticking the chip to the immobiliser.
Any idea who is near to me with Tech 2 ?

The bit that goes around the barrel. You need to keep your existing key but swap the chip in it, the transponder around the barrel and the ECU :y

All sorted. :)
Everything went to plan, all I had left was to swap the chips over. The chip from my key came out easily, but the chip in the donor key just would not budge. Didn't want to risk damaging it by levering too much so ended up cutting it out.
Car now idles and pulls as it used to, just need to remember not to BBQ this one. ::)

Programming a new key to old immobiliser won't be easy, as you won't know immobiliser PIN.
You will likely have to pair your new ECU to old immobiliser (then program any non original keys if required, assuming you have pin for old immobiliser).
This is a job best trusted to Tech2s. Cheap illegal clones using laptops have been known to make a right mess of this!!
