Title: Have i just been RIPPED OFF
Post by: hoj on 20 January 2010, 10:10:01
As mentioned yesterday in a thread car threw the aux belt off and plastic pulley melted.
Towed to garage i have used for 5 or 6 years (but possibly never again) told to ring today
Just rung and new belt pulley and tensioner £185.57 on my way there in a min to pick up and have words me thinks.
I understood at the most a belt would be £20 and pulley WITH tensioner would be about £60 thats £80 plus 5 or 10 mins labour ??????:(

30 mins possibly, but most have a 1hr minimum charge for labour.

I've never had to buy a complete tensioner only the pulley which is about £25 and a genuine auxiliary belt is £22 with a trade card.

No probs getting bits seperately from Vx dealer - tensioner pulley £24 on TC, aux belt £20 on TC.

15 - 30 mins to fit.

Can I ask which garage hoj? I don't see even Perrys charging that! If I'm going to pay someone to do work for me, I use Knowles St Garage in Radcliffe, it doesn't look much, but Mick is as honest as they come, & the garage has been there for years - passed down from his G/Dad! Make sure you're not on a dead line ....... he can talk & talk & talk & talk  ;D   :y

30-40mins to do the job as you have to pop the air injection pipe off and remove a bolt on the aircon pipes to fit the belt.

25 quid for the belt, 25 quid for the pulley.....so 80-90 quid

My money is on that they have changed the whole tensioner assembly which would add 10 mins or so labour and about 30-40 quid to the part cost.

Some dealers insist that the whole item only is available ....  until you insist they type the part number of just the pulley into the system ...

They than act very surprised and provide you with just the pulley at the correct price ... :)

I'm not certain it is deliberate by the parts desk ... it is just the way the "system" works when they click on the picture of the part ..... :(

I am pretty certain Nige your right (although I hate to say it ;D)
If you go and ask for the Climate Bulbs which there are 5... they will tell you there are only 4
Also the V6 thermostats have been changed, the actual thickness where the bolt goes through is far slimmer, so two different bolts are needed. Also the O rings are different. There are two a round O ring plus a square O ring which has dimples around it to hold into position. So you need to make sure when at Vx that your Oring fits the thermostat else a trip back will be needed  >:(

Had the tensioner go on my 'tractor' a while ago, local garage I use (have done for years) did the whole job, tensioner, pulley & belt for £86 inc VAT.
Invoice I have quotes £30 for complete tensioner/pulley, £9 for belt, labour £34  + VAT on the total.
Mind you, tractors maybe different!!  ;D ;D

So would think there has been a bit of overpricing going on  :(

I'll remember to not go there then .... not that I've ever used them. I do know around there, my Parents live across the road from where McPherson's used to be, but now live at Brandleholme.  ;)
