Sounds like the kind of half truth and misinformation that gets spouted after a few pints in the pub.

Any engine with a mixture of metals (cast iron block & aluminium alloy heads on the Omega) needs good quality antifreeze & corrosion inhibitor.

Corrosion can eat away at any metal part but if the head gaskets are compromised then replacing them is a pain (but not the end of the world).

My last 2.5 V6 was using about a pint of fully synthetic oil per 1500 miles of motorway driving (but it had done 200,000 miles). It would have used less if I had switched to semi synthetic.

If your cam cover gaskets are leaking then you could be losing quite a bit that way.

Dont worry about headgasket until it happens.  I drive a K series Rover, so something I'm well used to ;D

Oil usage - check for leaks

if the car has been sat for a year or so doing nothing then should do oil, belts and water change with a flush out, also check exhaust systerm and change the battery if has been left on, more so if it has been out side, if in garage then belts and water change and oil. just tobe on safe side as you dont want it to break down.
