Title: Oops! I think i need new brake pads...
Post by: Andy H on 23 January 2010, 22:01:21
We drove 700 miles last weekend and though the brakes felt normal they made a grating noise as we approached a roundabout about 100 miles from home so I thought I would check if there was a stone stuck in the caliper.

Our local motor factors sell Lucas/TWR brake components. Astonishingly they had pads and discs in stock so I have just fitted them :)

The new ones are at the top........

Good job you told us the new ones were at the top!   ::)

Three questions

1. Why did VX remove the wear sensor from the drivers side on facelift cars?

2. I know that some of the original equipment brake components are marked 'Lucas' so are the Lucas/TRW pads and discs I have just fitted the same as original equipment?

3. I reused the brake caliper mounting bolts, was this wise?

Not a very good photo unfortunately (it was dark and I needed to get the car sorted) but I have seen paint thicker  :o

its assumed that pads are changed as an axle set, so in theory it shouldnt matter which side the sensor is on, the ware should be even on both sides. What are the drivers side pads like?

looking at your pics it seems the metal pad carrier has rubbed on the disc. That suggests worn discs, or at least part worn? i beleive its two sets of pads per disc?
ie if thats the second set of pads on those discs then you need new discs as well.

Keep a close eye on the inboard face of the discs, if you see a rust line on the outside edge, bin and replace asap. Vx on trade club are recommended

re read. New discs. Seems wise. Not sure who makes genuine.

i've re used the bolts before without issue, replacements where missing from the new pad set, what else to do??? Wrightly or wrongly...

as said, plenty of life left in them yet  8-) would have been more impressive at night seeing the sparks fly lol

Loking at the colour of the old pads I would think that the disks have suferred too.
The reason they specify new bolts is probably because they have a locking compound on the threads. I use a drop of Loctite red on mine and have never had any problems on any vehicle.
You can do a modification if you want to and run a cable from a piggyback joint in the NS sensor wire to the OS pads. All the system is is a method of grounding the metal of the wire inset into the pads on the metal of the Disk and so completing a circuit that lights the warning bulb.
Yeah, do as advised too, check the inside of the disks themselves. The nearside tends to wear more due to the garbage off the road surface gathering on the nearside of the road. It acts like an abrasive and so wears the pads quicker I was told by Ferodo.

Thanks everyone for your replies.

The pads in the photo are the drivers side (no wear sensor). The passenger side were slightly less worn The plastic surface had worn away on the wear sensor but not triggered the message on the MID.

The pads on the inside faces of both discs were the ones that were most worn. The inside face of the drivers side disc had a groove worn in it by the anti rattle spring.

I did fit new discs as well as pads.

It's the opposite of that  ;).
The system throws up the message when the wear sensor goes OPEN circuit, which is why you can chop the remnants of a worn out/broken sensor & short out wiring to clear the message.  :y

few tho left in them yet.
inside pads wear quicker due to thats wear the piston is the outer is just draged onto the disc. allways check the slides when changing pads. and dont change pads n discs at the same time do one pair first  leave for a week then do other. pads 1st then discs. but the garage will do both together.

So, by your method, you're bedding new pads onto a worn disc, then when they're both bedded in together you put new discs on which need bedding in onto your worn old pads.  :-/ Far better to change both discs & pads together so you have flat new pads bedding in onto new flat discs! IMHO!  :y  :y  :y

x3 :y I was resigned to having to fit new pads from the motor factors to keep me mobile until I could order new discs and new pads on T/C. I would never spoil new discs by using them with old pads.

The caliper has rubber seals that deform when the brake is applied and pull the piston back slightly when the brake is released. The sliding pins should also have rubber riings that serve the same purpose to pull the outer caliper away from the pad when realeased. Very light brake application might apply the inner pad first but my money is on the increased rate of corrosion on the inward face of the brake disc being the cause of that pad wearing faster.

My new car has 17" Elite alloys and both faces of the disc are quite exposed which is probably why there wasn't a big difference in wear on the pads on each disc. What is a little more puzzling is why the drivers side pads were more worn than the passenger side.
