Title: Up in the air
Post by: guncharmer on 24 January 2010, 21:59:17
Hello,if i have my omega  on a lift supported at the body and wheels dangling can i put it in drive and let the rear wheels spin. i am asking because i stumbled across a thread somewhere in the depths of the forum with a brief reference to this and someone saying they had heard this could damage the drive shafts.i was intending to do this to check the drivetrain in motion, any thoughts?,regards.

i wouldnt just to be on the safe side because of the angle the driveshafts would be in . Unless you think there is a problem i would leave well alone tbh :y

I was planning to drop the atf fluid out, refill, run the car in the air through the gears to circulate the atf oil then drop this oil out again which ought to have a healthy dose of the unchanged oil that was retained in the torque convertor, and then maybe do a top up,run the car through the gears, drop the oil and refill again.
Unfortunately my maths tells me if i do this repeatedly and literally forever i will still never achieve 100% purity and run in to terrible problems attempting to split atoms !

As far as I have been led to believe you only need to let the engine run at a fast tickover and select each gear manually, including reverse for about ten seconds each while stationary. The level is then re-checked. Its what they do at the VX dealers when I asked while I was waiting.
Having the car or its drive wheels moving would make no difference. As for having it suspended and then running it at anything above slow tickover, it would probably damage the driveshaft couplings or at least their gaiters due to the angle they would adopt. GudLuk
