Title: Please Read I need help
Post by: Kelly on 22 January 2010, 19:53:39
Hi All

Please be patient as I am new to this!

I have (today) purchased a Vauxhall Omega  ;D 2.0l Petrol Auto CDX.  On the test drive the car seemed to run fine.  My dad helped me to check that the car accelerated through the gears, no clunks clicks or grinds only issue was a blowing from the exhaust system which the garage have agreed to replace on Tuesday.  Whilst we couldn't do a huge test drive due to very very little petrol everything was ok.  I got petrol and drove approx 5 miles, stopped briefly 15-20min.  When I came to set off again the car refused to go (only rev'd) although it was in drive.  After about 30 or so seconds the car slowly set off.  As I continued with my journey the car got considerably worse, revs struggled to get past 500, and all the time it was below 1000/1200 the car vibrated like it was going to stall (it felt like it was struggling for fuel but if I had the car in park and held the rev's it was smooth and quiet)  also I noticed that a couple of times the engine revved excessively but the car did not respond, the delay was about 30-45 seconds then shooting forward.

Pulling away in drive is very painfully slow altough it is a little better if you operate the gearbox using 1,2,3.  Any ideas?  is this an issue with fuel delivery, does it need servicing or is the gearbox on its way out or a combination of all 3 :(?

Any answers would be very welcome.

Thanks

"Hello" and welcome :)

As the engine is running, but the drive pickup is delayed, slow, or non-existant my first and immediate thought is gearbox fluid.

Check you don't have any obvious leaks .. you then need to check the Aut Transmission fluid ATF ..

This MUST be done with the engine running, and the car reasonably level. This can be tricky to get as well as access to the level bolt.

MarkDTM has written a little "cheats guide" that might help...

Click the link to read it..

Any problems ask away ..  :y :y :y

If you are not confident in doing this .. take it back to the garage and give them stick !!!  Make them do it in front of you :)

Worst case scenario is the gearbox is FUBAR ...  :(

Hi welcome to the forum.

can you update your profile with your location? It might be that a forum member nearby could offer help.

A common fault with auto Omegas is they need the gearbox oil changing (maybe every 80k miles) and the level to be correct. This is often and easily forgotten.

Hang on and someone will be along to offer more advice!

My brother in law has just checked them and nothing is registered for the gearbox, however the lambda sensor has registered a fault.  Could this be making the car run 'rough'

Thanks

take the car back and tell them it's not fit for purpose and you want a refud, if they wont play ball, phone trading standards and they'll soon refund you, then go buy a car that you can test drive properly, good luck.

A knackered lamba may well make the car run a bit rough, but nothing like the symptoms your experiencing. ;)

Biggest problem sounds like ATF Level. Ring the garage first thing in the morning and tell them it needs to be put right or you want a refund ;) ;)

normally a faulty lambda sensor would put on the engine check light, maybe an old stored code which hasnt been cleared

I think there right on the fluid level being a possible problem, had similar problems with mine, it goes into whats known as limp home mode, occassionally this also throws up the spanners light, it takes ages to pull off from a stop position, you should also not be able to put it into sports mode.

Firstly welcome to the OOF!
Its a long one but worth reading.....
Deary me, that has been a hard lesson on you for your first car. Really you should not have bought it until you (or you could have sked them to drive it for you while you gave them instructions of what you wanted the car to do) had been able to test drive it properly and the obvious leaking exhaust should have been been done by them immediately. The reason there was probably so little petrol was to prevent a decent test drive being done, its a very old garage trick! I am even surprised that they had not put a bit of paste on the leaking exhaust to get it past its warranty (if any)! There again, that was probably left so you could identify a small problem and they could then promise to repair it so making you have confidence in them. (another old trick).
I always ask to see the Service Record for the car - if it is not available (another old trick, just as the log book one not being available too) ask for the details of the last owner and ask them its history! If you are polite there is no reason why they should not inform you of the last keeper as it breaks no laws.
The advice you have been given by other OOFer's is correct - it is definitely not fit for purpose due to the fact that there are too many serious problems with it. The seller must have known of them too.
My advice is to contact the seller and inform him that you want a full refund or you intend to contact Trading Standards. Do not accept any offers of money off or repairs, they have had their chance and decided to try a rip off. Once they have refunded you report the seller anyway! Garages and sellers of that type need to put out of business. Trying to make a living is no excuse.
Why not try to locate car for sale on the OOF. When you have ask one of the OOF's in your area to accompany you, or meet you there to have a look at it. Not knowing your location I cannot tell you which 'travelling' OOF would be closest. These guys have many years experience of the good and bad points of Migs and know just what to look for.
Stick with it though - Migs are great cars, you just need to find a good one that suits you.
I think that this car was probably bought at an auction by them, given a quick clean and that was all. Low petrol level is another indicator of that.

welcome as said,
first off try selecting low gear on the selector and see if it pulls away better than in drive, as this could be selector switch fault which is also common!! if it des move off better then you mujst select position 2, when a reasonale speed is reached then pos 3 and finally into d, in other words yiu use the auto box as a manual, then as said return it to the garage for them to repair the fault!!let us know if its better!!

Well, er took it to my brother in law for him to read the codes, fault indicated on the lambda sensor only.  He had a look at the throttle body which he said could do with being cleaned.  Drove home feeling extremely fed-up and not looking foward to a battle with the garage.  The car stalled and so I restarted the engine and its got a new lease of life????  rev's are even ride is responsive gears are changing and the vibration has gone  ;D t smells like its running rich but the brother in law said that a service and lambda sensor should sort this out (the garage have agreed to do the work too)

It goes for an MOT on Tuesday so I guess we will see what happens next.

One thing I will say is what a lovely car to drive when its playing nice!

Thanks for all your help, much appreciated!

I will update more on Tuesday.

I need some help getting the heated seats to work, my dad said it was working yesterday but I didn't notice it working today. Thought it could be a fuse? would be nice to have the original book for reference.

Hi Everyone

Just wanted to let you know that it passed its MOT, although there are a number of advisory notices but nothing too major!  Means I can have a tinker and learn a bit more.  I will be helping the brother in law take an Astra Cabriolet apart this weekend as the engine has seized.  Has anyone got any experience with the Z20LET engine?

 :D :D :D :D

Did you buy this car retail from the garage or was it one of the trade ins sold round the back as scrap/spares/repairs to avoid any comeback? which is fair enough.
It must have been a cheapy with less than a weeks mot!
