Title: Wheel bearings
Post by: fingers21 on 29 January 2010, 13:46:49
Sorry for the millions of questions.

I just got a price from VXL for 2 front wheel bearings and they came in at £150 each!

I got a quote from a reputed parts supplier and they are £37.99 each! Bit of a difference.

I had a look at both and they are identical, but do i need VXL official parts for this, or are the cheaper ones ok?

cheers for the reply, the cheaper ones are made by QH. the price is so much of a difference, i think i'm going to try them, at least if it turns out to be something other than the bearings gone thats the problem, i haven't lost £300.

My car drags me all over the place with the slightest camber in the road, at first i thought wishbones, but when i jacked it up to check, i found i can wobble my wheel quite severely!

Once you finished rebuilding the front ... Wheels in Motion are easily the best (and IMHO the only) place to have the whole setup checked.

Discount for OOF members as well   :)

there has to be a possibility that your wheel bearings are ok,you need to identify where the play is coming from first, have a good look for movement in the bottom ball joint

Ive replaced wishbones, droplinks, idler arm, inner and outer track rods and still get tram lining. even going over road markings effects it. Had tracking done but not camber.

Jack the car up and try for play in the wheel at 12 and 6 oclock and 3 and 9 oclock, if you have play get someone to stand on the brake pedal if the play goes its the wheel bearings ;)

check as Pete says, avoid first line wheel barings, the conti option mentioned above is the one i'd go for. Some play can be sqeezed out by nipping up the centre nut but only a fraction, dont over do it. Some play is allowed acording to my last mot tester, will be an advisory, up to half a mill is allowed, over a mill, fail. (Hence nipping the centre nut can help if boarder line)
Weather you believe the tester though...

Generally though i suspect the fact camber has not been set means the car will handle randomly and WILL be waring your tyres in a manner that will effect them and the car until they are replaced.

Suggest completeing all further suspension and steering work asap while covering as few miles as possible to avoid further ware, then set up at wim or similar, ring him for a chat, he will also recomend companys nearer you if needed, hes a good lad.

Also just to mention some tyre makes will tramline more than others, Falkens esp are to be avoided on the omega.(and possibly other cars as well)

Wheel bearings replaced, definately shot, i also found the brake pads were so worn that the retaining spring had actually been rubbing on the disc! The massive play in the wheels also turned out to be the steering idlers, which will be the next thing to replace, they really are bad! Then 4 new tyres and a proper tracking/camber set up.

If wobbly wheels is the cause of your concern I do not think that it can be caused by faulty bearings, for the wheel to start to wobble on the bearing it (the bearing) has to be nearly completely destroyed. When the bearing is about to go you will start hearing noises while driving, the noise will be stronger when turning at speed.
I would check other possibles first...
