Have developed Automatic Transmission problem on my 2002 Omega 2.2 CD (80000 miles). The local garage engineer has hooked up to diagnostics and shows a P1700 'TRANSMISSION CONTROL SYSTEM MALFUNCTION'.Gear change erratic , sluggish from start (seems to run better at 40 or so) led lights on transmission console go out and return (sometimes). Dashboard warning light on permanently.I guess i'm in 'Limp Home Mode'Engineer tels me that this is a major gearbox failure and will cost £1500-£2000 to correct. All seems to have started after going through a minor flood (not deep at all)Any suggestions or does anyone know a decent auto transmission guy in North Warwickshire CV9 area?Confused

could be the selector switch which is mounted on the outside of the box, it could have washed all the greese off if you drove though a flood.
Its now drying up and is cracking.
The Autoboxes very rarley fail on omega's unless run on low fluid for a long time.
My money is on the selector switch....

I think that you have water in the selector switch as a result of driving through floods
Had a similar situation in July
I understand that they can be dismantled & dried out although mine was replaced
Wait for a few experts to confirm situation on the forum before panic sets in!

First step with any automatic gearbox trouble is to check and top up the fluid level (with the car level and the engine running and warmed up after a drive).
Try to syringe some of the old fluid out as well and see what condition it is in. Red and clear is good, brown and manky tends to indicate problems in the box.
Another thing to check is that the selector switch is OK. If you've got strange things happening with the lights adjacent to the gear lever this may have got water in it.
Third thing to do is to check all the electrical connections between gearbox and ecu.

Do the lights on transmission tunnel follow the stick movements, if not then strongly suspect selector switch, new they are about £120 from Vauxhall dealers. Quite a common failure when water is involved.

Before I started doing my own maintenance like gearbox oil changes, I used to take my cars to an auto gearbox garage in Littlethorpe - South east? of Leicester. Easy enough to find. Go up the M69 to Leicester under the M1 turn Right at Fosse Park towards Lutterworth. Go into Narborough village and go over the railway line. It is about half a mile on where the road narrows on the right. If you can't checkit/do it yourself you could try him.

As several replies have already said, it's almost certainly gearbox selector switch. This sounds very similar to the problem I've been having recently on and off. I guess I must have run through some heavy water as my gearbox LED's started lighting up like a Christmas tree. When this happened the TC and spanner light lit up on dashboard and car went into limp mode. Has settled down a bit now (must be drying out) and is ok most of the time so getting the selector replaced at the West Midlands meet in February.
I think a new selector switch will be a bit more preferrable to £1500-£2000 for a gearbox!! :o ;)

I had similar problem on my 2.2 cd definitely sounds like selector switch , dealer pricey at 235+vat, available much cheaper from breakers if you can't locate one, even so it's first thing to rule out.easily fitted too.

Change the CAM SENSOR on the ENGINE. Did they read the engine ECU?

Change the CAM SENSOR on the ENGINE. Did they read the engine ECU?
I think they must have done TB.....P1700 is an engine ecu code....and tbh id ignore it as my 2.2 often has that stored.
I see where your going with the cam sensor......I wonder if P0340 was stored as well.
Its the lights on the selector going on and off......which makes me think its the selector switch as well.
