Title: 03 Omega 3.2 Elite
Post by: alunonhisown on 14 February 2010, 19:24:02
Can anyone tell me what the part number is for a new thermostat for my car PLEASE. I am going to go to Southern Vauxhall in the morning and get a new one and get a local back street mechanic to fit it for me.
Surely the timing belt will be ok till I return from France?

For the stat there are two types, one with thick flange, one with thin, believe either will do, if its thick make sure it comes with bolts as yours will most likey have thin one.

Make sure you get the 2 o-rings for the coolant transfer pipe as well.

Timing belt? Sorry but my mind reading protocol is offline today, when was it last changed?

Stat is a long job, budget for at least 5 hours at mechanics rates

Your best bet is to contact JamesV6 ... he's far better than any "back street" merchant .. if he can fit you in around his other work ..

What written assurance can you trust in the paperwork that you received with the car to say that its been changed as per?  Even then, things do go wrong sometimes....

We had proof on the 3.0 we bought, came from a very nice couple who owned it for 5 years. But still, did not trust it. For the sake of £150, its worth making sure.

I am prepared to pay for the belt and water pump to be done but I know no-one who can do the job. I have asked Loo Knee and James V6 and they are too busy till the weekend or middle of next week.
I am NOT trying to save a few quid by not getting it done.
I have paperwork that says it was done in august last, but I do not believe it.

Yep, plenty more decent garages open on a Monday than there are on a Sunday

Where did you go? Halfords.....? National Autocentres.....?

Ring around in the week and play them off each other, alternatively contact Pete or Daz and see what they say

Can we cut across the assorted crud floating around here, perhaps?

The purchaser of this car is not happy that the belt and tensioners have been changed as per schedule.

A foreign holiday is looming.

Prices quoted appear more than is wanted to spend.

Will the belt last out?

Get an AA/RAC/Green Flag recovery card and a mobile and give it a go for about 1000 miles abroad.  If it breaks and causes a potential fair cost of a rebuild, use the phone and recovery card to get home and break the car and get some of your cash back.

..... or, bite the bullet ans spend the dosh and get it done to give peace of mind.

No need to bounce around in circles.......

You all know who he is and I do not need to publish his name here do I?

I dont....  And I'm not overly fussy either.  You entered a deal with your eyes (and expertise, suitably fortified by the forum) and are now asking advice?  Hey ho...
What does that mean?
I have NEVER bought a car afore, my husband always did that. it was Reading services, freezing cold, wet, and I was being rushed.

Hindsight is a beautiful thing Diane, but come on, buying a car in a motorway service area......?

Asking for trouble.

Rent a car for your France trip and lets get your Mig sorted out when you return.

If your French trip is for what I think it is for, the LAST thing you need is car trouble on the way there or back......

It means I'm not fussy who you bought the car from.

You have obviously spanned the forum for some time and learned loads about the marque regarding its weaknesses, and strenghths.  Mean nothing more....

Was it that Josh mush? he's a dealer right? Never ever trust a secondhand car dealer even if he's your best friend.

Buying ANY used car has risk associated with it. Lets not forget that our Migs are well outside their manfacturers warranty & the price reflects that ...........

I'm sure that we ALL have reflected on something that we should have done when buying a used car. Another of life's lessons learned the hard way ,,,,,,,

It was, but alloys moved to another car before it was sold, so its on standard Vx alloys.

It was of course the car advertised by saranbailey , it would have fetched what its worth, about £1000-1200 if i had a free reign to question the seller.

Di, try Elite Pete/Welung666, I'm sure one of them will be able to help you out.

Unfortunately I'm just too far away to be any help this late in the sequence of events. :( :(

As for the purchase of the car... You bought it with your eyes open and TBH I'd have had a look at it if I wasn't after an estate ;) ;)

There must be someone who can help before Wednesday?

My view .. and it's only given to try and clear some of the mud ...  :(

You have an obviously very important trip to do ....  personally I would NOT plan to do this in a newly purchased car .. even if it came from a dealer with a full warranty !!!

Those "who know" will remember that before I went on holiday to France with the 'van on the back I towed to the "lakes" meet just to check the car out, on the grounds that a problem in UK is easier to fix than a problem in France.

However, you bought the car with the intention of doing the trip. You now have reason to doubt the accuracy of the information given. If you take the car you will be worrying all the time about what "might" happen. This distraction will make driving in a foreign country on the "wrong side" even more risky IMHO.

I would strongly suggest you use a hire car for the trip, and the forums help to sortt he car out once you return and the pressure is off.

It is the pressure you are putting yourself under that concerns me. Finding someone to do this amount of work at short notice is in itself .. another risk.

Can anyone tell me what the part number is for a new thermostat for my car PLEASE. I am going to go to Southern Vauxhall in the morning and get a new one and get a local back street mechanic to fit it for me.
Surely the timing belt will be ok till I return from France?

What written assurance can you trust in the paperwork that you received with the car to say that its been changed as per?  Even then, things do go wrong sometimes....

We had proof on the 3.0 we bought, came from a very nice couple who owned it for 5 years. But still, did not trust it. For the sake of £150, its worth making sure.
£150. I was quoted more than treble that today, so who does a cambelt and water pump change for £150.

£150 is DIY cost
Well young man, I wish I was as capable as yourself.
but I am not, so £420 it is then.

Di, Di...

I've already told you in reply to your text today - get the parts (I can help with tradeclub) and I'll come and fit them Free Of Charge.

I'm down you're way most weekends.

I can't do it before Wednesday - but this weekend is  probably OK - certainly for the thermostat, cambelt kit,  and full service.

Get the train / fly etc for your trip if you can, and I'll sort it all as a freebie when you return  :y

Title: Re: 03 Omega 3.2 Elite

Well it's less than ideal by any  stretch, but  if you can get the parts and can sort out some VERY good lighting, there is a CHANCE I could do the cambelt kit on Wednesday evening - depending on getting rid of man flu!

Couldn't squeeze in the stat in that time as it's quite an involved job - but  at  least it would eliminate any serious engine damage risk as a result of broken  belt.

My only concern  is

A) If anything goes wrong, is incorrectly supplied etc, there is no time buffer to correct it before the trip

B) I currently have man flu, and it's dependent on  making at least a partial recovery!

The offer of sorting it F-O-C stands, just to hopefully ease some of the annoyance you bought a car with a few faults.

But it's really, really  difficult to guarantee  it could happen in time for you to go away, and is  definately a risk... for reasons above..  :-/

Title: Re: 03 Omega 3.2 Elite
Post by: JamesV6CDX on 15 February 2010, 00:17:09
Just to add - I'm not looking to do anyone out of any business etc - but

It just seems daft for Di to pay circa £420 + fuel for a garage to do a cambelt kit change, when much of the time I am only 25 miles away,  and have ample experience changing V6 cambelt kits.

The stat, plugs etc could be done at leisure after Di returns - but I reckon at a push, we can squeeze in the all important cambelt kit, for peace of mind on the trip...

No cost, other than a cuppa tea, if you can get the cambelt kit.

I'd also recommend you get a water pump, aux belt, and 5 litres of coolant too, for a proper job.

Di I will call you tomorrow and see if something can be sorted.

Maybe I can chip off work couple of hours early one evening.

I was  prepared to come and fit a cambelt kit as a favour if you could get one Di - not knowing you'd already sorted it with someone
