Title: Cleaning standard Omega alloy wheels...
Post by: mudflap on 08 February 2010, 12:28:04
My standard alloy wheels on my 2.0 GLS Estate had brown stains in between the spokes, especially in the corners - i cleaned with a worn washing up "greeny" and Jif and removed most of it but some dirt still persists in those corners, is there any product that will shift it without damaging the anodizer?

ive used that with good results before too

some say it is too harsh....but when your wheels are stained, not much choice left.

you 'paint' it on, then clean it off and rinse well, seems good stuff.

Wonder wheels (as per most basic alloy cleaners) is little more than watered down brick acid

Cartec acid free wheel cleaner, used it for years, there is some on ebay so you can have a look and see what it is then search the web. i get it in 5 litres from A+E motor colours in york. Its actually alkaline, wear a mask if you spray it on,its nasty stuff for the lungs though doesnt do any damage to the wheels or lacquer finish,i brush it on,agitate with the brush and rinse off with water using a hose pipe. I use it on plastic wheel trims as well with no harm done,it just eats brake dust, even caked on.

Green Pads, no way, they will take the varnish off in no time. Best use Wonder Wheels or what I use - Dr Beckman 'Rescue' (clean and green) Safe oven cleaner. No smell and non irritant. My wifey is badly asthmatic and it don't bother her. I have used it weekly for years and the wheels are still like new with the only varnish blemished due to the change of the rim weights for the new tyres. Must get that done while I remember! Spray it on by the trigger gun and let it soak while you wash the rest of the motor, rinse it off and its job done. Bit of Solvite after and it stops the brown quite a bit.

So i would say then, its basically wonder wheels in a bigger container, and different name. ;)

Received my bottle of "WonderWheels" this week and experimented on one alloy wheel - amazing results, lot of patient scrubbing required but even managed to clean the wide flange side of the wheel, many years brown dust removed!  8-)

top job!  ;)
