Title: Elite suspension recommendations
Post by: Gaffers on 19 February 2010, 11:14:36
Hi gents,

I know this has been touched on before but cant find the thread.  I am looking to replace all the suspension on my Elite.  I have heard blisteins are the way to go but which one.  I am looking for holding that will handle a spirited drive, not that fussed about the extra 'comfort' the Eite gives me over my CDX but I guess having xenons and trailering boats a lot means I have to keep the self leveling functionality.

Much obliged for your input on this :y

They have their own level sensors on the nearside suspension.  :y

quite a few have gone for standard GM MV6 setup, makes it less boat like in the corners, and lets you have fun, but ride is still good  :y

So if I switch to MV6 standard shocks and springs, keep the level sensors I should be ok?  Sweet!

Any idea how much they cost on TC?

Think you will loose self levelling on MV6 setup, shocks and springs are stiffer, but not leccy, so cannot adjust, would need to pull the fuse to the self levelling pump.....

also pre-facelift MV6 its shocks only, facelift its shocks and springs

Remember Albatross going MV6 on this Elite, but keeping self levelling, not sure if you can get self levelling MV6 shocks or not  :-/ :-/

I have blisteins on my Elite estate, they were on there when i bought the car, initially i didn't like the harshness coming from an unmodded Elite saloon, I've now got used to them an prefer them to the softer original setup.

The self leveling has been disconnected, I've not noticed any difference between that and the saloon self leveling..

LOL, thats not what I meant, I know what you tow ;D

I meant it severely limits your options.  I think GM is the only option.

this subject is rather vague imo. Which way to go, what works with what, more questions thsn answers it seems.

Only conclusion i've come too is i need to keep self levelling, same as you. So what springs work with those shocks? ...would be nice if you could fit mv6 lowered sports chassis (face lift only i believe but can be fitted to pre facelift) all round but keep self levelling and set it  15mill lower to match the lower ride hight of lowered sports chassis.

Trouble is i dont know if the shocks will work with those lsc springs ie not fail and leak oil. If i could answer that i would do it tommorrow.

In theory i suppose stiffer springs should give the shocks an easier time? Who knows, anyone?

I have a tow-bar on mine too, with the stiffer suspension didn't notice much difference in the height of the back end when towing a tin tent..

Why should towing make that much difference to the rear height when the nose weight should not be more than 75kg?

Would some of those spring assistors help (the rubber type that sit between two of the coils) to stop the ride hide droping any lower with the already lowered MV6 suspension?

go for plod spec springs. lot stiffer than std but no drop in ride height.

Because when I am towing a boat I have at least 100kg of kit in the boot it not much more if it is a long trip

well, parts man is still insisting some police spec cars simply had self levelling added to mv6 spec, this would seem to ve backed up by
http://www.autobahnstormers.org/eligible_cars/omega_b/mv6_tech.asp#Suspension
and this admitedly odd advert
http://bournemouth.gumtree.com/bournemouth/41/51740741.html

they could all be wrong obviosly.

no experience of billys though G. sorry.

although the abs spec refers to a 3.0 which being pre facelift would be stock springs anyway.

Thinking about it there must have been MV6s built with xenons thus by law must have the self leveling.....

There are self-levelling headlights and self-levelling suspension. Different systems.  :y

I have had no issues with my MV6. The shin breaker is probably a little low to start with but the back end is stiff enough that it doesn't drop too much with load.

Have had a 100' lattice trailer tower on the back and a diesel gennie in the boot and it was happy (ish).

Bilstein B4 on my estate, front and rear.  40/50 mil lowering springs all round and a tow hook.  Rear self levelling relay removed to avoid the compressor working triple overtime.

Tow a tin tent now and again and, yes, clearance can be an issue with regard to speed humps and the like, but I take my time when the pikey palace on the rear anyway.....

Got them from Balance Motorsport then had the setup done by Tony Bones at WIM with new wishbones on the front at the same time.

Does stiffen the ride from the standard Elite - not unduly, I hasten to add - but I prefer it that way....   :y

That sounds like what I'm after although 40-50mm is a little extreme and I dont want to have to delcare anything to my insurance.
