Title: Door check strap - fixing the A pillar mounting
Post by: Clouseau on 21 February 2010, 11:38:31
Well after a scintillating 14 hours I have replaced the head gasket and removed a bucket load of sludge/mayonnaise from the breathers, throttle body etc.  Runs like a new car with a perfect tickover.  :D

Nice.  Looks like a vindaloo and reminds me of that old joke about "sh*t in yer carb mate".....

Turning my attention to other things now. The driver's door check strap is a concern - there is no 'death crack' noise, and it has been kept well lubricated, but the bracket on the A pillar is starting to come loose.  The two spot welds nearest the car have given way and I have drilled these out and replaced with rivets. However this has only partially helped, and I suspect the steel behind the bracket is heavily corroded.

I seem to remember a thread on his which referred to a repair kit from Vauxhall (I think there was a plate which fitted from the other side, and a 'how to') but I can't find this anywhere.

Anyone point me in the right direction?

Thanks  Rich

Ah.. thanks!  That was the thread I was looking for but unfortunately it doesn't solve my problem, which is at the other end of the 'strap'.  Anyone got any suggestions? I can make up a plate and bolt through to the otherside but what is the access going to be like?  Can I get to this from inside the wheel arch lining? :-/

Have not had a look in that area but would think the internal A pillar access would be from inside the car cabin rather than from the wheel arch?  That is, removing the kick panel in the drivers footwell and possibly the assorted ECU's/wiring, temporarily, to get hand access.

If it was open via the wheelarch then all sorts of crudd would have ready access to inside the car cabin, I would have thought....   :-/

Cruisetopoland's was coming away there to, I just ran a continuous weld around the edge of the inner section. Cured it straight off ;)

Yep, get it welded. Had my drivers side done about 2 years ago for free by the local Vx stealer (result!!!) and no probs since.

I didnt chek for the door strap mount but I just replaced a wing on my car and there is a bolt just next to the mount that you get to from behind the wheel arch liner from outside.
That said I would agree with welding it up instead.
