Title: Carlton.
Post by: amigov6 on 18 December 2007, 22:20:33
:)Thanks for trying to help a lost cause. I've learned to post ebay pages but forgotten again.
Anyway the main thing is i've just bought this (after auction ended) for a mate who's a single Dad & his present motor (diesel escort yuk) is about wan****d. He needs to get his litt'lun to school & himself to college(mature student) We're almost like brothers so will do anything we can to help. As many of you know i'm skint for a year yet but have some unused holiday which i get paid extra for so i'm using that money to buy this for £200. Hope it gets him a good runabout that he badly needs.
Deal agreed with seller, all paperwork with car, minor faults can be sorted in workshop. Would'nt mind it myself...budget motor?????
     Item no:-260194478785.

It's a bit new for a 2.0 but should drive OK the gearbox is very similar.

If it is solid it will be fine, it would be fun to sort out!!!!

I had an E reg with the good 2.0

Looks quite tidy for the age. A good tough workhorse with plenty of life in it yet, with luck. Can't argue with the value for money. I'd probably have been slightly happier if it wasn't an auto, but give it a fluid and filter change to be on the safe side...

Give me that to run around in over an Escrot diseasel any day of the week. :y

:)Hope so Broocie. Picking it up on Saturday. My mate Tank, (if you saw him you'd understand) is off down south in a hire car but has changed his ins over so i've got the Carlton to play with/ sort/valet etc, but i can run it  around legally on my ins just to get the measure of the old girl for a few days. Quite looking forward to it, got a soft spot for Carltons, besides £200 does'nt buy you much of anything nowadays. :y

It looks good, especially for the money. :)
Good tough old bus the Carlton, and the 2.0 lump is pretty much indestructible!  ;)

Cheers Dave & Daz. I'll post some better pics when i've been to town on it, reckon it'll valet up a treat!
Anyone got a spare VX griffin badge for the bonnet???????????? Sorry, noticing bits already!!!! As posted this is a "love job" for a mate who'se even skinter than i am. Best thing is he phoned me today & said William (his 6yr old son) wants to ride back with me in the "new" car, bless him. I held & bottle fed him in one arm when he was new born & i'm proud to be his godfather.
Reckon it'll look good next to my Mig, 2 of VX's finest. :y

Would check everywhere for rust though. My father had a 91 on a G which did 265K but it was rust that killed it, nothing mechanical.

Base of the upward curves on the rear chassis legs is a favourite rust spot, if I recall....  Easy for water to collect inside and rust from inside outwards....

:DWell she's home & parked on the front. Ran home a treat, all auto changes good, demisted fine, a fair kickdown (used to my V6 manual) did'nt try sport button but it lights up when stood so should work on the move. Sits & brakes straight.

  Bad points.

Needs a ball joint, maybe two.
Handbrake doing nothing, switch lights up on dash so hopefully it's a snapped cable.
All 4 leccy windows not working, switches have been taken out, rewired but when you press any button the yellow light dims but no windows move so we have power.
Needs rocker cover gasket.
Battery needs securing.
Fuel pump noisy, can hear it whiring away when stood but not on move, a mate said it's ok.

With filters, fluids, plugs etc. should be a good old bus. Looking forward to giving her a thorough valet.
She's got the 8v engine so cambelt & waterpump easy enough. 116,500 mls no history.

    All suggestions welcome.

       Cheers, Guy. [smiley=2vrolijk_08.gif]
