Title: Converter Trouble
Post by: gotchya1 on 03 March 2010, 10:37:28
Hi everyone, drove to my local town yesterday and 2.5td auto seemed to lose power, then there was nothing when i pressed the throttle down,

The car was just idling, then the rev,s picked up to about 1200rpm and droped again, first of all in neutral and park the car would rev freely, but once i selected D i had nothing,

I costed home using 1,2 and 3 gears but these were having the same problem when the gear box went to change gear

now i got i home i am having auto transmition fault come up on my screen, plus a smell of oil burning,

The car is now up in the air ready for me to pull the autobox off, to see if any seals or something have gone in the coverter as there is oil stains coming from the bellhousing
any help or advise would be extremly handy as this is the first auto i pull off and look at,

if the converter has run realy low on oil what damage could have been caused?

could i be looking for a new one?
or could i renew the seals or something,,

thanx for taking the time out to read this, and hopefully she will back up and running soon,,,, fingers crossed, G

Sounds like ATF loss to me ....  if you are going to drop the sumps the seals are best got from jpat

Before you start make sure your shower works and you have a large bottle of detergent  .. :(  the ATF stinks and you WILL get covered in it !!

Refiling instructions for the autobox here ...

If you need a replacement box .. the breakers in the "parts for sale" section usually have some available .. :)

Hi
Surely if the box is low on oil, the engine will rev away in gear without the car moving.  OP says engine will not rev when in gear.  Sounds to me more like an engine fault than a g/box fault.  Some engine problems will throw up a gearbox warning.
