Title: Is there a dentist in the house?
Post by: JamesV6CDX on 17 November 2007, 08:01:03
Apart from a couple of fillings (When I broke a tooth in half on a tic-tac!) I have usually very healthy teeth and gums, but I've had an ongoing dental problem for a while now.

First thing I noticed a few months ago, is that the outside of my gum above a tooth was swolen. So, Off to dentist, gives me antibiotics - but does beggar all. Dentist then X-rays it, sends it to hospital. X ray shows something in the gum. Hospital come back and say the tooth needs root canal treatment.

Dentist did the course of (painful) canal treatment on this tooth, several times over, before doing the root filling. He then assured me all would be well.

For a couple of weeks, the gum on the inner side of this tooth has now been swolen and raised. Over the last three days, it has been increasingly painful - I'm now at the stage whereas I'm popping Ibuprofen like smarties (Not really, I'm sticking to the label dosage!)

Last night I was sweating with the pain, it was that bad. Called the dentist emergeny number, message says call the NHS Out of hours dental number. So I call that - "this service is closed at 8pm"....please call NHS Direct. So, Call NHS Direct - and after spending about 20 minutes telling them I don't have chest pain and I can breathe, they tell me to get painkillers from the chemist in the morning.  how totally useless!

I have an appt. with my own dentist on Monday. I'm not sure what he'll be able to do, though  :-/ I only need to touch the gum in that area, and it hurts so much it makes my eyes water  :'(

Not nice, got any whisky?.....soak some whisky on some cotton wool, stick it in your gob next to the affected area, you can repeat this process, if it does'nt initially work to numb the pain then at least after several tries, it should get you half pissed :y// at which point you'll forget about any pain :y

If you get pain killers, put the tablet on your gum were the pain is and suck it.  :y

Ouch - been there, you have my sympathy
Its probably an absess, in which case it'll be antibiotics before he touches anything. If that doesn't sort it he'll possibly do an apicectomy.

Good luck james.

BTW - check with the chemist first, but I think you can take paracetomol in parallel to ibruprofen

Been down the antibiotic route for this problem too many times before, it's time for them to operate...

The temptation to stick a pin in the gum to drain it and relieve the pressure is immense...

I have some mole grips...

I suspect it could be an infection following the root canal work....not that un-common.

that sounds more like an abcess. In which case, especially if the gum is swollen, you wont be getting it out.  Best scenario will be anti bitiotics to reduce the imflamation which will reduce the pain...then back to get it out.

Meantime, take ibuprofen not paracetmol - it may assist the swelling. Or asprin.

I prefer the old, tried and test method:

Mrs TheBoy "Do I look good in this new dress"
TheBoy "No"

Troublesome tooth knocked out. Problem solved.

Make a warm strong salt solution and swill it around the mouth for as long as you can. Dentist gave me that advice when I had an abscess next to my wisdom tooth that caused me so much pain I was practically in tears. It does work, as the salt is absorbed into the gums and helps kill off any abscess.

Good luck!

Hi James,
some thoughts from SWMBO. Lancing your self is not a good idea, as it can introduce infection, and also are you certain you know where the swelling core is?. It might be the tooth next to the treated one, the treatment may have fixed that but it could have spread to adjacent teeth. If the pressure builds up too much it will "self lance" and burst, but thats positive pressure, so infection can't get in. Warm water, salty if you like will keep the area clean and increase blood supply thus promoting healing. Sore throat lozenges or sprays (Vic do one) could provide topical anesthesia, which may help give temporary relief. In the mean time go and work on the car, this will help take your mind off it.

Ooops... thanks a lot for the advice - however I have already self-lanced myself, with a sterile pin  ::)

Everything that came out shouldn't have been there... the pain is now out of this world, but hopefully now I've lost that, it should subside...

The dentist will kill me, but I just had to do it...

Use the salt water swill NOW. You could make matters worse if an infection enters, even though you used a sterile pin.

Hi James,
The idea of warm salt water mouthwash to act as an antiseptic/clear away any bugs is still good, until the hole heals over.
