can you help car cut out while driving restarted after a couple of minutes and then cut out two more times travelling home, which made the steering unsafe, someone mentioned it could be a sensor have you any ideas please

You don't say which engine .. (stick it in your profile .. saves being asked a zillion times!) .. so it's possible the paperclip/pedal trick might not work .. if you have a 2.2 ..... :(
but sounds very much to me like it could be a crank sensor - code 19 on the older engines or 0335 on the newer ones ..

Hi it is a V6 2.6 auto.
I done the check , turn the key foot on break and fuel pedal. It just continued to flash which means as I read that there isnt any problems ?
I had a look tonight when I got home to see where the crank sensor was I think If I am right it is at front left at bottom with the wire coming from it, it looks like a spark plug end.
I can get a sensor but not sure why it isnt showing a code ?
Any ideas.
I am not sure whether to use the car tomorrow a bit concerned that when on the bypass if it cuts out the steering is very hard, but also feel like i would like to see if it happens again ?

I wouldn't risk it mate, mine did that to me on the M40, luckily i was in a bit of traffic and could limp on the hard shoulder. It will keep doing it and progressivley get worse.
Correct, the end that plugs into the engine block does look like a spark plug shape, then the other end connects at the top/back of the engine, be careful tho as there are two types, an oval and rectangular plug.

Hi crank sensor on 2.6 is on the side of the oil filter slightly to the rear easier to remove scuttle to get at the plug

Hi I took the car to work today about ten miles, it got there ok, it seems to run ok, but on the way home about two corners from my house it cut out and I had to wait about 5 to 10 minutes before it would start, I have heard when the crank sensor is playing up the car can stop at any time, is there any relation to the car getting hot over the ten miles although it didnt stop on the way to work.
I think I will just go ahead and buy a crank sensor and hope thats the problem, although you have said they are easy to fit, take of scuttle, there still doesnt seem alot of space round that area.

theres not a lot of room but it can be done i did mine back in december laying in snow and it took about 40 mins.

Same issue on my dad's 2.6 omega... cutting out when getting hot... with 335 code on doing the pedal trick.
Replaced crank sensor - all fine.. no issues. :)
Temporarily, if you need ot drive it, drive it with heat on HI and full fan (annoying) - but managed to drive it deveral times in traffic for long persiods without it cutting out. Having the heat on HI draws some of the heat away from the engine and doesn't make the fault so "quick" to cut in.
