First post so go easy,, Just reaquired a 99 Omega 2.0 Gls that i originally bought in 2004, 1 owner then, then sold it to my brother, bought it back, sold it to one of my brothers bus drivers, then bought it back again, did a deal with my brother, again, now just bought it back, but with a few problems, this one wont go away so its staying for keeps this time lol.

Its a nice car, with immaculate black cloth interior and is going to be used as a third/weekend car, and I plan on repraying it later in the year, I'm a Panel Beater by trade and have a workshop so no problems there.

Down to the car, the cambelt went whilst my brother owned it so the head was stripped, tested and complete set of valves fitted, but since then it starts first time no rattles, smoke or anything else odd, but, if you switch it off when you go for fuel say, then by the time you get back to it, it will not start, almost like fuel starvation.
After endless cranking it starts and then will run as sweet as a nut till you stop, then same thing.
If you leave it 15 mins or more it starts straightaway.


I've done a clip test and have come up with these codes

0115
0403
1690
0201
0201
0203
0204
1502

Any one any hints or tips on the above, thanks in advance, and sorry about the long post

would say main fault is cam and crank sensor and other faults are just ghost faults as not working properly.

Hi Rusty and thanks for the reply, I did think of both sensors first but the symptons didnt seem to fit and i expected to see the relevant codes for them flash up but they have'nt, they have both been replaced within the last 12 months and the car has only done approx 2000 miles in that time, but i wont discount them anyway.

I was tending to err towards the temp sensor code 0115, as i know in my range rover they are critical to its starting ability, just not too sure on the omega

My worry would be the 1502 ... immobilisor .... I wonder if that is kicking in and stopping it firing ???  Engine will crank but not fire with an immobilisor fault...

Don't know the setup on yours .. do you have the little chip in the fob ?? If so check its not loose.  On my old 2.5 the chip worked loose and gave me many starting problems ...  until I found out and fixed it with a dab of glue !!!

On the V6's the crank sensor can give starting problems without showing a code, but you seem to have a few others there ..

Coolant temperature sensor fault code and bad hot starting..  I would be inclined to take a look at that. Maybe the ECU is flooding the engine because it thinks it's cold when it's hot.

When you get problems starting, try cranking it with your foot on the floor for a couple of seconds before trying again. This should clear a flood condition.

You also have an EGR code and a couple of faults from the injector circuits for all cylinders.

My initial thoughts were on this line as I never did the rebuild,  I usually label everything I remove just in case its someone else that has to put it back together, and i did notice what looked like a couple of wires dangling at the rear of the engine area, but i was finishing off for the day, so will have a look on the ramp tomorrow and see what I find
Thanks again to everyone for the imput, it gets frustrating when your on your own, nice to have a different perspective on it

Sounds like exactly the problem I used to have with my '88 carlton 2.0 years ago. Turned out to be a dodgy relay under the bonnet.

Many a time in a petrol station etc I had to lift the bonnet and give the offender a quick rap with a knuckle before driving off happily having convinced any onlookers that I had healing hands.

Trouble is that was 20 years ago, so cant remember what the relay did (though something to with fuel rings a bell) but the fun stopped as soon as I replaced it.

Dont suppose it could be the same in your Omega as Vx are bound to have improved in the interim, wont they?

Fixed, running absolutely perfect, got it on the ramp today and found 2 plugs and 1 wire hanging around doing nothing, so after a bit of contortionism found out where they went.

 1 looked like the egr valve, another was very close to it, not sure what it was for but it fit, and a single wire, which looked like a temp sender, not too sure if they are at the back of the block/head but again it was the only thing i could see, not too much room to get a clear view.

Started her up and bingo, no eml, went out straight away, and all the symptons have gone, took it for a test drive, stopped it waited, started, brilliant.

I forgot what a pleasure it is to drive it as its been a while, so i took it home (40 miles) and it behaves fantastic.

Thanks to everyone for their suggestions, now I feel soooo much happier I'm just planning what colour to paint it, wheels, etc etc, must keep it from the missus tho ::)

Spot on, they where the ones, and yes you're right, not easy to see or get at, I've still got a bent neck and my arms have stretched i'm sure
