Title: Valve Job Info
Post by: bbacon on 03 March 2010, 01:01:31
Found out today the timing belt has skipped a beat and now I get to fix some bent valves.  Anyone have any sage advice, parts info, things to be done while its apart, links to proper info etc.  Seeds to a money tree ;D.  Seems pretty straight forward do the vx valves take a special tool to remove them?  Any words for the machine shop?

Cheers,

BB

While it's apart, you should replace the whole timing belt kit (so, the belt, idlers, tensioner) and while that's being done, the water pump.
It's a good idea to clean the breathers while fitting new cam cover gaskets. Black sealant must be used when doing the gaskets. Other seals might need replacing such as the plenum O rings, breather bridge to plenum seal and throttle body to plenum o rings.

There are some good articles in the 'maintenance' section on this site, and the head gasket change will help with the valves (obviously you will only need to work up to that point in the guide unless you do actually want to change the head gaskets):

reasonably easy.

The valves are pretty standard GM parts os easy to source (either in the Uk or US).

Probably best to import the head bolts and gaskets (unless a cheap source is now available in the US).

Have a look for the theead I made about the work on Mick Dundees car, plenty of pics and fine words in there.

I would also re-seal the stat to block joint and the oil cooler plate whilst in there.

Cheers, you are the man. :y  I have recently, within 2500 miles changed the stat and r/r the oil cooler.  Do you think I still need to reseal as the parts are so recently replaced?
Thnx, BB

Stat will have to come out anyway to take the head off, might as well do the oil cooler anyway as it will take you half an hour when the heads are off  :y
