Ok so there is a twig in the aircon rad...the aircon rad on the car I just broke wasnt healthy...so my question, or questions is/are...
Will replacing the aircon rad require regassing the aircon or is it just water filled??
Will it matter if the replacement aircon rad comes from a manual or auto or facelift/prefacelift or are they all the same??

If I said it's not a radiator but a refrigerant condensor ..... does that answer your question? :y

Refrigerant fluid/gas flows through the aircon rad so yes it will need regassing.
I can't think of a good reason why GM would change the design of the condenser. The condenser on my late facelift looks the same to me as the one that was on my early pre-facelift but I would check part numbers before ordering anything.

Had a feeling that when I have removed the pipes there was green stuff on the joints...pretty much as I thought but as the cars I scrapped have all needed regassing I couldnt be sure...hmm so I need to get the gas removed first or get someone to do the job for me... >:(

Legally yes. If the condenser is rotten though there won't be any gas to recover.............

All aircon condensers on the Omegas are the same and yes it will need re-gasing.

I should add, if something has gone through the rad, then there wont be any gas left

Hmmm I'm wondering now if its not that at fault...there is water leaking from the rad area (but only occasionally if the car is at an angle parked on the curb with the passengers side wheels up on the curbstone), quick inspection it looked like a twig in the aircon rad which doesnt look in wonderful condition BUT its water and the aircon still appears to work fine and be nice and cold...

lol, if you hole the aircon condenser you get a one of shot of high pressure gas...

Extreme care must be taken when disconnecting air con systems as the refridgerant can cause severe skin burns, it also become toxic if exposed to naked flames or lit cigarettes :o

Produces Phosgene gas. :-?
IIRC it's not specifically toxic, but doesn't 'sustain human life' .....well, that's what I was taught as an apprentice. ;)

R194a is not nearly as bad on the phosgene front...R12 was very bad mind

Yep I was right just checked on wiki it is highly toxic and works by disrupting the blood air exchange in the lungs so basically you end up drowning in the fluid that is created in the lung tissue :o

I thought modern 10 year old cars used 134a :-/
407c seems to be what we have to use in buildings now, don't know what new cars are using :-/

May I please make a correction to the replies stating the refrigerant gas type as R194a
Since the discontinuation of refrigerant R12 in 1995 the current refrigerant for auto use is R134a.
Some experimental investigation is under way in the use of Carbon dioxide, but is not yet commercialy available.
194a is a designation of a small part of the DNA chain !!!

I think this (to a degree) is irrelevant as I'm pretty sure I have sussed the actual issue and its not the aircon rad :y
Pretty certain the washer bottle is leaking as the message just came up again and needed filling again despite me not having actually used the windscreen washers at all since last filled...makes sense as its in the same area, the leak is water not aircon gas AND the aircon works fine with nice cold air coming out :y
The twig is in fact just a couple of leaves on a stalk and while the aircon rad isnt in fantastic condition...it doesnt appear to be leaking :y
