Has anyone changed one of these? If so how easy/difficult is it?
Mate of mine has done all the usual cam cover seals, breathers etc in a hope to resolve an oil leak witout success. Took his car for an mot and had a look under it while it was on the ramp. Seems that the rear crank oil seal may be the cause!!
Other question is, anyone up near Keighley/Skipton area that may be able to sort for him??

You need to hold the crank still whilst you remove the crankshaft bolt, if not you will end up bending valves as this bolt is so tight.
I am not a million miles from you if you need a little help :y

Cheers Darth. Think it needs to be confirmed that it is the seal but as the cam cover has been done and it still seems to leak this would be the next logical weak point to cause the oil drop i think.

Double check there isn`t still oil residue from the previous leaking areas trickling down the rear of the engine to that low point where the engine and the gearbox meet.Also there is a purpose design gap at this point to let seeping oil escape that weeps or flows from the rear crankseal. With the breathers blocked and the crankseal weeping there could be an accumulation of oil still to disperse out of there.Clean all the oil contaminated areas you can see with brake cleaner/degreaser and then monitor the area for new oil seeping from anywhere. Cleaning the breathers if you are lucky may have put an end to any oil seeping from the crankseal or reduced it to such a minimum you dont need `surgery`.Cleaning the areas will also let you rule out that oil is not still seeping from the half moons etc on the cam covers. There is still atf fluid leaking in that area to rule out of course.
In fact ,dont mess about listening to dodgy guess work at all,drive it immediately to Mr Darth Loo-knee at his convenience as he has already offered to help and cross his palm with silver.

You may have a point with the half moons!! I'll have a word with my mate later and see if he sealed them when he put the new gaskets on. Cheers for that.

Were they Vx gaskets or pattern shite?
Was the seaent used in the correct places?

They were VX parts, im not sure on the sealant as it's my mates car and he did it not me. Thats just what i was wondering when the half moons were mentioned. Phone call needed to confirm when he gets in i think!!

I'm confused. The front pulley is held on by a super tight bolt (250 lbft IIRC) but I thought the flywheel/flexplate was held on by 5 or 6 smaller bolts.
Either way the rear crank seal is going to need gearbox separating from engine in order to get to it :-/

Spoke to my mate earlier and he's going to have a good clean up down the back of the engine and gearbox, then see what happens. Asked him about the cam cover and sealing the gasket around the half moons. He used the guide off here to do the job so all should be well there. Looks like a suck it and see scenario for now but cheers for the help guys.
