I found changing seats in my old 96 very easy, when doing the fronts raise them to there highest position before doing anything, the slide right back and remove the two torx bolts at the front and then slight right forward and remove single screw holding plastic trim on and the remove two rear bolts.
Removint the plastic trim exposes the wiring and is easily disconectable.
I can't comment on the air bag issue as the 96 did not have side air bags but I am sure someone will advise you on this.
On the rear seat pull the two plastic tags on the front edge of the seat base and pull the squab up and out.
Fold the seat back down. Bend the metal tags up on the bottom of the back rest bits that don't fold down and then slide them up and out.
The middle bits you undo the hinges by releasing the carpet on the back of the seat and undoing the 10mm headed bolts.
All very easy really, Just watch the front seats are quite heavy and it easy to damage the trim whilst removing.

Just make sure you disconnect the battery before you start give it 30 mins or so and you shouldnt have a prob with the airbag light when you reconnect

Thanks for your top tips !!! Will let you know how it goes!!

but after you've unbolted the seat from the floor if it's electric ;) ;)

Absolutely .... almost impossible to get to the bolts without power !! Use power to move the seat, undo all the bolts, disconnect battery, have a cup of cofffee, unplug seats ...
Refitting is the reverse of removal .. :)

I wonder how many turns of the emergency crank handle it takes to move the seat fully forwards/backswards ...... assuming you have one (I've never ever seen one ;D)

You must've turned your ignition on at some time during then. Doing the job with the battery still connected shouldn't have upset the airbag ECU. ;)

I've got something like this ....... http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/OBD2-Multiplexer-ECU-Scan-Tech2-for-Opel-Vauxhall-COM_W0QQitemZ150422483511QQcmdZViewItemQQptZUK_Diagnostic_Tools_Equipment?hash=item2305e0f237 which has diagnosed & cleared a couple of air bag faults/lights. The first time it works for you it's paid for itself. Apparently serial post is best, USB connected have been know to have problems ...... assuming you have/access to a serial posted lap top. ;)

Will you be passing junctions 2, 3 or 4 of the M5 on your way? If so I'll do it for you :y
