My drain is blocked and filled with a lot of cold water. just tried to take the grommet out but couldnt do it. Read the maintenance guides and just to be clear I do need to take the grommet out, yes? Once its out the water should go through the hole and drain outside of the car? Its on the passenger side.
I know its obvious and sort of know the answer but just need clarification.

no, grommet does not need to come out.
poke a srewdriver into drain from passenger wheelarch :y

Is is easy from under there? I was trying to get at it from the passenger side engine bay.
My car is 98/R so it drains into the engine bay (according to the maintance guide)

On a 1998, the drain/gromet should exit from passenger wheelarch, if so, thats the easiest way to unblock.
If yours doesn't exit that way, but exits on chassis rail in engine bay, they hand in by pollen filter I'm afraid :(
Once flowing, put a load of water through it to flush it through :y
Then, always put a jugful through when you open bonnet (surely we all check fluids weekly ::) ;D)

hmm, maybe its the early 1998s that do - my mv6 does. later cars exit onto chassis rail

I had my hand in and the water was freezing cold!
How many grommets are there? I can see one where the wiring goes through, is there another one behind that?

Can't you get your hand down as far as the chassis rail and have a poke up the grommet :o
I can on my TD, not much room in there with that big diesel lump, but it is possible.

Had this with a 98 Elite (soaking wet n/s front/back carpets). So i put my hand all the way down (not easy!) until i got to the drain gromet & wiggled it about till all the water drained.
Trouble was after a few days water filled up again so i eventually got a long screwdriver & pushed the bloody thing out & never put it back - never had a repeat of the problem again! :y
The gromet is approximately in line with where u have your tax disc displayed but u'll have to have a good prod about at the bottom ::) till u can feel some rubber then u'll hear all the water escape :)!

eliteomegaman, just had the exact same same happen albeit by accident. I was poking and prodding the grommet and it went below the hole and now I can't get it back up.
The problem with this is that now the water will pass by the wiring that is in the other grommet, so will it get corroded in time?

I'll be totally honest with u mate - i only found one gromet which let all the water out.
My thoughts, whether right or wrong, are why put a bloody gromet in there in the first place if all it does is let water out if the scuttle gets blocked with sh*t which it normally does >:(
If there's no build up of water in the scuttle due to the gromet being taken out then surely nothing can rot :-/ or am i wrong?

The grommet is angled so any water leaving the skuttle is diverted away from running over and into the chassis rail.
