Title: Cambelt and Thermostat

Hi

I have the car going in for a cambelt and waterpump change next week however I took the car out yesterday noticed that the temperature only gets to about 80 in normal driving however when stuck in traffic it went up to just below 100 which is when the fans cut in and it dropped back to just about half way, my question is this normal? My other car is a VR-4 and the temp never gets above half way ever when warmed up. If its a faulty thermostat is it best to get it done at the same time does it make easier when the cambelt is being replaced and save labour time?

thermostat is in the v valley under the plenum and inlet manifold..

you can check the thermostat by immersing it in boiling water.. if it opens completely its ok..  not an easy job though..

Easiest way to check the thermostat is to start the engine from cold (overnight is best) and leave it running at idle while you satnd with your hand on the large pipe that goes from the engine to the top right of the radiator.

If this slowly starts to warm up then the thermostat has failed open.

What it should do is to stay cold until the thermostat opens and you feel a quick "surge" of heat through the pipe.

IMHO your description sounds like a "stuck open" thermostat

If you remove your thermostat and it's not obviously stuck open, don't be misled into refitting it.
 None that I have changed has looked faulty, a new one has always restored operating temperature.

I should add, if your going to the trouble fo removing the stat, change it anyway!

And dont forget the 2 O rings that go on the link pipe.....in fact, its often best to get a new link pipe at sub 10 quid.
