I had a fair bit of driving to do today, and was driving to Kingsland and on the way there EML came on AGAIN.
I sent James V6CDX a text and he replied to carry on driving unless it starts flashing. It got me home as you can see but what does the fault code mean?
James thinks it may be something to do with the cats, but that was from memory,
I tell you, I cannot take much more of this. I had my boss in car with me and I would have looked a right narna if we had broken down.
But, it did not and I am home safe.
Just need to get the code read and repaired.
TIA
Diane

P0430 Catalyst System Efficiency Below Threshold (Bank 2)
James is correct as always, might this be the precat 3.2 issue? Never had a problem on any of them myself...but from memory this was the code wasn't it?

P0430 Catalyst System Efficiency Below Threshold (Bank 2)
Thanks Josh, and the cure, if you have it is............
-
Hiya Di
The code is: P0430 Catalyst System Efficiency Below Threshold (Bank 2)
I think this is a very common pre-cat code, which many 3.2's around your mileage do log.
A lot of people just live with it - although the "fix" involves relocation of the lambda sensors.. . :y
-
and the cure, if you have it is............
To remove the lambda sensors at the front, and fit a bung (bolt).
Weld a boss further back, and re-locate the sensors.

;D you quoted me before I edited my post Di, then James answered it much better.

More details on the issue, and the fix, can be seen in this maintenance guide:

Thanks to you both. I truly appreciate it. Now, I am none the wiser, who is the welder that can fix this? Is it an MOT fail, not that it matters as not due till 26/03/11. But I will be honest, it is ANNOYING, I just don't like that light on, as if another fault occurs, I may be none the wiser as the EML is already on and I would not know of any further faults if that makes any sense. A blonde moment.

Quick Q .. did you fill up from a "strange" source ?? The only times I get this problem is when I change fuel between France & Wiltshire .... long shot I know .. but if you refuelled at a "cheap & cheerful" or somewhere with "old" fuel .. might be the cause.
get the EML put out and see how it goes would be my initial thoughts ...
Mine has not recurred since last august, and I don't expect until this August on day 2 of the French holiday .... about 100 miles after filling with french fuel !!!
It is THAT predictable .. honest !!!

I reset the codes I think last weekend - but am happy to pop up and do so again
(Good excuse to get some of that damn fine texaco diesel from Merthyr, that makes my car run better than any other!!!)
-
I did fill up in Asda Merthyr before I left for Kingsland, was not a problem before then, Always filled up in Snows, and never seen a problem before that, but I have in all honesty filled up in Asda before.
To be totally honest, all I was thinking about on my way home is 'where is my camera' as this bloody car is going on eBay tomorrow, god, I was panicking as my boss was in the car with me, and she spotted the light come on not me.
Just said, 'oh it will be fine' and crossed my fingers, legs, and eyes, praying for it not to start missing.

That code won't cause a miss, Di. :y
What we need, is a nice hot summers day, to remove the cats, get the bosses welded in, and refit them.
Nothing to worry or rush over ;) :y
-
Yep, that code can be completely ignored on a 3.2. :y

there is an inevitability with this code and 3.2 (and 2.6 i believe) mine has been code free for the last couple of years until about a month ago when the pedal trick revealed 0430. No light on in my case yet.
Yes its annoying, but not worrying once the code is known, it is almost considered normal on this engine.
Fix is well known, as James says.
Re selling i would advise a look at auto trader and see whats available for the money first. Also worth considering where you'll get free advise such as on here with ANY other car.
No need to panick, panic pants. ;)
-
Apologies, Di....I thought you said code 0340 (crank sensor) NOT 0430......I can weld, so James and/or me can do it for you easily if needed.
Worry not!!
Mike.

STOP PRESS>>>>>>>
Am reliably informed by a good well educated buddy that there is an easier fix.........
He apparently solders some resistors across the lambda sensor wires to "fool" the ECU all is well, thus allowing the EML light to be extinguished.
Will find out resistor values!!

i have had cars come in stock with no eml lights in the dash, on tech 2 shown 0430, assume someone thought bulb removal was cheaper and easier than pissing aboout with the welder, and seeing as its not a problem worth worrying about fair enough, but how do you see the other faults as they occur, fools, why did they take the bulb out!
-
Thats just stupid....a bit like a PO in my last car taking the ABS bulb out for the m.o.t...............
Ever heard of the "resistor" fix, Si??
-
Hmm, not sure exactly how the lambda readings are used by the ECU, But im guessing a fixed resistance, plus normal readings could well affect the cars running and fuel consumption.
