Further to my earlier post. Can some kind soul either explain or display a picture as to where the Cam Sensor is please. If its relatively simple I might try to chnage it myself. Miracles DO happen.

Very, very rare to unheard-of for them to fail on a V6, and you'd almost certainly have a code stored in the ECU.
They are located behind the sprocket on the No. 4 (furthest towards the passenger side) cam.

Thats rather interesting. All RAC man could say is code "31"...which don't say much huh !
My mechanic DID say that oil was starting to leak in to the plug holes when he changed all the gaskets last week. Is it possible one or more of them could have had it as a result. ?
Will pick up some plugs on the way home. Will need them at some point in any event.

yep.. you must sort that first or your problems will be complicated soon..

Code 31 just means that the engine wasn't running when it was tested. No indication of a fault whatsoever. :y

Do your own "code read" ... 3.0 is the paperclip method.. :)

Let us know EXACTLY what codes you get ...
And if you want to be clever .. do one with the engine running, one with it stopped ..... and you'll see the 31 dissapears with the engine running .. :)
(BTW .. just to make you laugh ... I was "told" about the "magic pedal trick" last night in the pub .... and also told to do that with the engine running !!!!! :D :D :D :D :D ... when I asked what would happen if I put the accelerator to the floor with the engine running there was a stunned silence as the penny actually dropped .. :) )

I DID IT ! Well I never.
Got the expected Code 31 AND Code 12 which doesn't appear in the code lists BUTTTTTTT
I mentioned that I'd had ALL the cam gaskets changed...EVERYONE no matter how big or small.
Well ! I checked out the drivers side spark plugs tonight before it got dark. The front two plugs and holes were full of bloody oil..nearly an inch in each.
The rear one was dry as a bone. Didn't look at the passenger side but suspect oil may well be in some or all of those holes also. Guess what !!! She's going back to the mechanic.
Either the young lad who did the work didn't clean out the plug holes OR the new gaskets are leaking. Either way, not my problem. They need to sort it.
Although i cleaned out those that I could get at, she's still shuddering so either oil IS in the other bank or the plugs are flubbered.
Crazy !

Did he clean the breathers......and were they genuine gaskets

I ....
AND Code 12 which doesn't appear in the code lists .......
isn't 12 the start & end of the test?

Yes....so no codes that are of concern
-
" isn't 12 the start & end of the test? "
He he he he...Oops ! Sorry for that...didn't know.
SO ! Looks like the problem was just the "ton" of oil STILL stuck in the plug holes then.
She'll be going back to the mechanic for a complete plug hole clean out and I've got new plugs for them to change.
Is there any chance of the HT's or Dis pack being flubbered as well as the plugs....assuming the plugs are knackered of course ??

I would say the mechanic has made a pigs ear of the cam cover gaskets. I suspect he will how try to cover his incompetence by claiming the 'warpped covers' myth ;)
The breather system MUST be cleaned
The cam cover gaskets MUST be genuine GM
the camcover bolts MUST be done to 8Nm.

I'd cleaned the breathers about a month ago...clean as a whistle as far as I know.
ALL gaskets, big and small were genuine as I'd purchased them myself personally from a main stealer on TC.
Thank you for the "cover story"...I'll be on guard for that one. They certainly aren't leaking "outwardly".
She won't be going back to them until at least Thursday so IF the covers are at fault, logically the oil will return to the two holes I cleaned out tonight after a trip to work and back tomorrow.
The RAC are soddin' useless by the way. Told me their machine came up with code 31 and that was it.
Didn't even check the plug holes.

You have the benefit here of people who know the cars inside out, unlike the generic breakdown guys
-
I am in the RAC just incase I do breakdown to get me home.
They are good for getting you home ;D ;D ;D as I have used them ::)
But wouldn't let them mess with my car :o
You would be suprised mate how many Garages have not got a clue. >:(
