What colour is the oil on the dipstick Pete? Clean? Black? Coffee coloured?

As you said, White smoke and overheats fast, that is the typical symptoms of a head gasket, but they dont normaly come on a V6. mayo in the oil filler cap is normal, do you do a lot of short trips?

is the oil on the dip stick discoloured?
do you have oil in the water? ( expasion tank )

you could try a compressions test to see if that gives a clue to what side might be fuba.

Wouldn't mind betting it isn't HG?

Oil cooler perhaps...Suspect you'll get a few answers from those a lot more qualified than me shortly.

I doubt it:  HG failure is more likely to result in water in the oil rather than the other way around.  dirty brown coolant is indicative of oil cooler failure.

when the oil cooler fails it will clog up the cooling system hence overheating.

Chances are it is your oil cooler and not the HG.  whatever you do, do not let the average garage who does not know the background to these V6 engines convince you it is the HG without hard, specific evidence, such as compression testing

oh and I'm not far from you so happy to lend a greasy hand as long as I can fit it in with work (which seems to take over).

Not convinced its HG. Quite the contrary.

Is it using LOTS of water? Oil?

Sounds like its not been ideally serviced, as you imply the coolant is rusty, and the oil is black.
