mileage is 93k its a great car but not sure i can or want to throw 1k at it as has been suggested it might cost by people round here  my wife was driving it at the time and she said it just lost power and coasted to a halt the aa guy who towed it back home said it was the timing belt that had gone and that had probably bent the valves etc

Take the cam cover off & have a look at the belt. You might find it's jumped teeth rather than broken, probably the same thing as far as bent valves are concerned. It depends how much work you do yourself rather than pay labour rates as to whether your car is financially worth putting back on the road. A 'new' head might the way to go, rather than all new parts on your old head.
Cam cover off is  the first thing to do. Remember thatyour water pump is driven from your cam belt, so it might be that that's died causing slack in the belt enough to jump teeth.

Sure it's a timing belt, not a timing chain?

or if its not tight, often tensioner fails and belt just slips a tooth or two, look for any damage or missing teeth on the belt  :y
