Title: Z32se performance camshafts
Post by: V6Astra F on 21 April 2010, 10:50:35
Hi

Just want to make 100% sure that it will work , sent a mail to piper asking them if the opv6bp270hb cams they have for the x30xe will work on the z32se motor . Looks like im in luck because they let me know that it would work , now its just to save up for a set  . Did any of you guys do this mod , do you think that I would get a nice gain in power since I'm looking for more torque  . After I fit them I can have the Unichip Q remaped to get the best out of them .

Thank You

looked at this mod to do on my X30XE, and was told (from Vulcan Engineering) if it was done to a 3.2  the only gains will be tractibility and the way the power delivery is obtained, not lots more horsepower. However, I believe a good remap will probally release a few more horses......

Decided to spend my hard-earned elsewhere on the car if it was not a reasonable increase for the money spent.

Torque is largely proportional to engine capacity, assuming the engine is not being strangled by induction and exhaust systems, or extremely mild cams, which most modern production engines aren't to a great degree.

Uprated cams generally use a less mild profile that shifts the torque peak higher in the RPM range to give you more power. You will not get significantly more torque, and will probably get less torque at low RPM, but whereas a standard V6 gives a fairly flat torque delivery from around 2500 RPM to 6000 RPM you will probably end up with a more "peaky" engine that needs to be revved harder to extract the power. The torque might have moved to 3500 to 7000 RPM, for example, meaning that the engine isn't really "on the boil" until 3500 RPM.

This is not normally what people who want "more torque" are looking for. ;)

Thats what im worried about , I want to get the max torque from low rpm , do you get better cams for these motors ?. Still running a 57mm exhaust system want to upgrade it to a 63mm system that might help a bit on its own . And im still using the 2.5 intake , TB and lower divider might be a good idea to source the 3.0 ones from the vectra b  . What is the size of the 3.0 TB compared to the 2.5 one ?

For low down torque intake and exhaust systems will not be the bottleneck so there's no point in changing the exhaust or TB IMHO.

The best you can do is to get it chipped / remapped to ensure you are getting the best from what you've got (often the stock ignition map is a little conservative so you can gain a little there).

Thanks  :y

just think of a cam as the means whereby you choose the shape of the power curve.

you can have all of the power low down or all high up - just choose the cam profile that suits.

And just to add, all you can really do is add more duration as the lift of the 3.0 and 3.2 cams is pretty much optimum as the curtain area at full open is about equal to the valve port size for the standard setup.

Think I will go for a remap , we had connected the valves on the intake the wrong way arround  :-[ . Only noticed it a day later . Might make a difference on the power figures .

I know some people have them removed but im not sure if I should do the same .

Thats a pants torque curve!

Nothing like what it should be

Could it be because the valves on the intake was swapped around ? Or was the tunner wasting my time and money  :-/

It could be.......if it was the engine would have felt pretty different when set correctly

The V6 torque curve is a pretty constant gradient

Have noticed it to be a bit better , but will need a remap to get fueling right they told me to remove the 4bar fpr since its getting to mutch fuel with the 216cc injectors so im back on the 3bar one. Also if you floor it there is some hesitation where as you press down gently the car seems to pull better without hesitation . Still got the problem that it hesitates after you start it when its hot almost as if its not getting fuel , as soon as you pass 4k rpm its fine  :-? . Have replaced the ECT sensor but I think its the ECU . I have a omega x30xe ecu but I think its a M2.8 and not 2.8.1 so I dont think the valves on the intake would work .

Those undulations on the torque output are classic symptoms of a resonance in the intake / exhaust system, which is exactly what the multiram valves are there to iron out.

Having said that, there aren't really enough points on the graphs to be sure and the scaling makes it look much worse than it is..

If I were you I would consider a wideband lambda sensor, and possibly a proper after market mappable ECU. Then you can experiment on the road without chucking money at rolling roads. :y

The laughable thing is that the graphs above show how the Unichip has actualy lowered your peek Bhp!

yep it has  :'( . Good thing I found another tunner , never going back to those guys  >:(
