For the first time in the 10 months I've had the car the engine warning light has come on.
The pedal trick has revealed the codes 0420 and 0430 - is it feasible that both cats have started to fail at exactly the same time. :(
The warning light came on as I was driving at about about 50mph on a reasonably smooth road, but there are some bad potholes around here. We've also just got back from Kent where the roads are even worse, if that's possible.
Any chance something may have shaken loose?
In the event that I AM looking at replacing the cats, any recommendations on reasonably priced units?

As said hundreds of times before mate, its more than likely your precat failing, but all you need to do is relocate the two sensors and put bungs in the old holes, all for the small cost of about £12,so no need to buy new cats. There is a how to in the maintainence guide from when wellung did mine. :y

I've had a look at the how-to mentioned. Sadly I don't have the facilities, equipment or skills to do something like that.

Got the bosses off ebay mate, and if you know someone with a welder, your laughing. All you have to do then is take off the zorsts, which is a couple of bolts, just a shame your too far away. :(

Did you refuel at a different source perhaps ??? IMHO this common fault can often be caused simply by a change of fuel ... I get the error a few days after arriving and refuelling in France .. reset the lights .. its fine untilI return to England and refuel ....
I think, but others disagree, that the "system" picks up a change in the exhaust gases as a cat failure .. ...
Either way .. a reset once back in UK and the light stays out for a year on mine .. :)

The fuel question did pop into my head. I filled up on my return from Kent, but at the usual place - Tesco. I know that's no guarantee as I well recall the issues of a year or so ago with contaminated fuel. Fortunately it didn't affect me as I was driving a diesel car then.
The car is going in for an oil & filter change on Tuesday (I don't even have the facilities to do an easy job like that!), I'll ask them to clear the codes/reset the light etc. and see how it goes.
Thanks for all the input, peeps! :y

Refer to Petrol prices in General discussion area about use of supermarket fuels :y

I've been meaning to update on this. The light has come on again with the same codes....
This was a while ago now, but again it was about 10-15 miles after filling up at Tesco.
I think I might have an emissions check done, that should show if the cats are actually failing?
Any way I can clear the light/codes without paying the garage to do it?

Do you fancy a day up in the midlands? If you buy the bosses and bring 'em up and I'll do them for you :y
Got a huge shopping centre round the corner, you can do a bit of shopping while you're up ;)

If I were you I'd take Wellung up on his offer. I had the same problem as you for around a year and knowing what was causing the problem, I just got used to the EML light being contantly on. Eventually went to MarkDTM's one weekend and he moved the O2 sensors for me. Cutting the new holes for the sensors was without doubt the hardest part - we still had problems drilling the holes even with Marks 1.5HP bench drill!!
Have done around 8k miles since then and the problem has never returned. :y

Seriously thinking about it.... even though it's a bit of a trek it has to be cheaper than buying 2 new cats!

I know the majority of members on this forum are extremely knowledgeable compared to myself but I can only say about my experiences.
Several months ago my EML came on my 2.6 V6 CD and I got the same cat efficiency codes you have now. Finding money extremely tight, I did not fancy the idea of possibly having to get new cats.
I do a lot of very short journeys in my car which i am sure is not very good for the engine, usual 4-6 miles a day and a bit more during the weekends.
Someone on this forum suggested doing an Italian tune up to give the exhausts a good blow through to try and dislodge any build up inside.
Initial nothing seemed to happen and the light remained on until about 3 weeks ago, when all of a sudden the light stayed off.
The cars just had its MOT and the emissions were well below the legal limits. (although it failed on front wishbones, which have been replaced.)
May be the short journeys caused a build up of dirt around the sensors in the exhaust and the Italian tune up gave my exhaust a chance to clear itself, any way I am happy as it passed the MOT for this year.
