Am looking to do a breather cleaning on a mini-facelift 3.0 soon and have a few questions.
1) There is a small oil leak at the rear of the drivers side bank. Obviously this is from the cam cover gasket - but if the breather system is cleaned first will that reduce pressure on the gasket and lessen the leak - or is that just wishful thinking on my part?
2) Does the plenum have to be removed to clean out the breather system? I admit that from the how to guide it looks the sensible thing to do, but can I do it in situ? If the black cover comes off and I can get to the rear box then surely the throttle body bit could be done in situ also?
I realise that the cam covers will need doing, but am looking to do things in a series of stages as cant devote a whole day at the moment - so my logic was to do the breather system first, followed shortly afterwards by the cam cover. The car will also be under cover for the cam job but isn't at the moment.
Yes, I know that I should do both straight away - but it really isn't possible.

In my limited experience
1) I suggest wishfull thinking. Mine leaked with spotless breathers. Not a lot, but enought to make a stink on the exhaust.
2) To do a proper job I can see no other way but to remove the plenum. The front stub of the breather box inserts into the rear of the throttle body so the bb cannot be lifted straight up, and it cant slide backwards as it inserts down into the plenum. To get at the bolts to remove the throttle body I had to remove the plenum. I suppose you could remove the timing belt and rear cover and come at them that way :y
If you dont want to remove all the attched gubbins you might get away with removing the 4 bolts, undoing the egr and teasing it up so you can get at the neccessary bolts, but you would have to be careful about o ring position when you put it down again.
There's bound to be someone who knows better along shortly.

I thought exactly the same as you. I stared at it for about 30 minutes trying to think through every possible mishap and in the end took the plenum off anyway. Comes off surprising quickly and easily.
Only tricky part is getting those horrible hose clips back on afterwards. That took me almost as long as getting the plenum off and on again.
Have some jubilee clips in reserve!

Pipe pliers or small mole grips - easy with a bit of practice :y
