Title: Diff noise on 2.5
Post by: Phil-b on 24 April 2010, 13:04:37
Hi everybody especially you omega experts.

Iam still trying to find the source of the noise of what I thought was a cv joint, then thought it might be the prop centre bearing. Having split various joints in the transmission it looks like it's the Diff! got that whine! and there is more backlash on the pinion input shaft than I would expect. It's an x reg 2.5 petrol facelift with 90k on the clock. Vauxhall dealer also confident it's the diff. Now, at 55k soon after i got thre car a Vauxhall main dealer renewed the diff pinion oil seal. Im I right in thinking this would involve resetting the pinoin pre-load which if was not correct would lead to premature failure, because 90k is no mileage for a diff to go, and would resetting the pr-load help.

Do you get the whine at all speeds.

I expect so however increased speed + road noise makes it difficult to be sure. It's  most pronounced at about 30mph and on the over-run.

Hi  I'm no expert, but just happened to read about pinion oil seal change in the Haynes manual yesterday. Haynes says that it will involve resetting the pinion pre load and recommends main dealer attention.  A home work around is also provided in the book. Best of luck!
