Post by: squid on 27 April 2010, 21:27:18
hello all i have a 2001 mv6 estate and at my wits end i have a missfire on 2nd cylinder and was wondering how hard is it to change the coil and plugs im not very mechanicly minded ive been to a few gareges in my area (bromley in kent) and then fob me of with some sort of excuse i just dont want to be ripped of so am willing to give it a go myself or if anybody knows of a decent garege or mechanic in my area any help would be great thanks.

CPC packs (Coil per cylinder) are fairly easy to do. As are the plugs. The only plug you may struggle with is number 6 (rear plug passenger side). You may well find oil in the plug well of the missfiring cylinder.

Give Lizzie Zoom a shout, she is fairly local to you. I'm sure she'll at least give you some pointers as she has recently done her cam covers.

If you are a fairly capable amateur mechanic it is not too bad a job.

The wipers and scuttles need to come off, then you remove  the plenum.  Next, for ease of access, remove intake manifold.  You will then be able to get to the dis pack to unbolt if it is like mine on a 3.0.

However, if you have a later "across the heads" dis packs, you can simply unplug them and remove, after just removing the plenum. ;) ;)

The plugs are also accessible with the plenum off, but as Wellung states the rear one on the passenger bank is a bit difficult to get to!! ::) ::)

The mis-firing could be down to faulty cam cover gaskets, allowing oil to seep into the plug wells.  You will soon spot this if it is the case :'(

Then it will be a full breather clean out as well! :D :D

FURTHER EDIT:  If cam gaskets have failed, then a full replacement of those is required! ::) ::) ::)

Sorry for all this dire stuff, but I am covering almost every eventuality for you! ;) ;)

This is for a dis pack replacement when sited at the rear of the passenger bank of engine:

This covers later engines with dis-pack / coils across top of banks:

After removing plenum:

......and finally to clean the breather system:

You don't need a book! Have a read of the index of the maintenance guides. Look for the guides on:-

Cleaning the breathers
Cam cover change

Managed to do mine without removing the plenum, but was a tight squeeze.  Problem I had was with the bolts on the coil pack, seems they attract water down the pack of the engine

:-? You don't need to remove the plenum for a plug change either.  :-/ When I replace my DIS pack ears ago, I didn't remove my plenum. The plugs have been changed more recently though.  ;)

How small are your hands and tools then Andy.........especially for the drivers bank?? :o :o :o

I personally cannot see the problem in removing the plenum to make access that much easier, and I would say possible for all plugs!  :D :D ;)

My hands are completely at the other end of the scale from small!  ;) I just have a good selection of tools & I'm tall enough to reach in over the engine to get to the coil pack.  :y

You mean passenger side?  ;) Omega's plugs are easy compared to 24 valve Senators .... as you know  :y
