Title: Oil filter changing

Hello, can anyone help me? I'm trying to remove the oil filter cap to change the oil filter on my v6. Used a breaker bar to get it shifting and the the whole housing has started turning instead of the cap undoing. Realise i need to hold the housing with a strap wrench to get the cap off, but does it matter that the housing has been turning?

Hi
So another heavy handed bugger has been there before you. the cap only requires a nip to tighten it ... 15Nm
As you say, you need a starp of some kind to hold the body to remove the cap. At the base of the bady there is either a socket cap head or hex head bolt.

Thanks for the link, worth considering the conversion to a screw on filter.

Dont know mate,they can be just as bad sometimes,as i found out a couple of weeks back on the father laws focus,tried everything to get that off,and in the end we resorted to the screwdriver through the centre method,and plastered in oil. ::)

having both to work on, must say i prefer the spin on, with 2.2's its so easy, i can do an oil change without jacking the car up, nice and easy to get the filter off, no mess, fill it before hand, on it goes.

I find paper ones on V6 a real messy job  :(

I think this fix should be a last resort. I know it's a faff, but try and persevere with removing cap.  The best way is to use a "Metal Band" oil filter wrench and tighten it firmly around the housing. (don't try the flexible type, as these are a waste of time in this application) Now using your 24mm socket on the cap, turn the whole thing until the housing / wrench handle comes into contact with the engine casting. This should now allow you to apply as much force as is required to remove cap. Once the cap and filter have been removed, the housing can be re-tightened back to the block from the inside using a 27mm socket.  :y
