Title: cherished registrations
Post by: Andy B on 12 December 2007, 10:48:08
On the way home from work last night I saw a pre-face lift Omega. The thing I noticed straight was its registration E228 JLR! Mmm ? An E reg Omega? But if you put it into Autotrader/DVLA the number does match the car. :-? It just seemed to be a very ordinary number to pay out a cherished transfer for. :-/

Indeed... I know of a  few people who have ordinary-looking private plates, because they represent the initials of the owner's name or of the children names etc.

Also, I knew someone who had an old Astra with the registration AB 12 (these are not the real characters obviously), and the story behind it was that her grandfather was a wealthy businessman who ordered a new Bentley in the 1930', the car was delivered with that plate, AB being his initilas, and 12 being the number of the building that his business was operating from. Apparenty the dealer had to regsiter the car in Scotland or somewhere far away to get the two first letters they wanted.

i used to have a pair of numbers NKZ2514 and NKZ2515, had them on two cars i was running but then sold them both and so spilt the numbers

......

TEN 66 (a local number) used to be on a 400 series Rover.
GEN1E (another local number) used to be on something a bit out of the ordinary - can't remember now - but that was years ago before the price of 'cherished numbers' went through the roof.

As some of you know i have a private reg on my omega, it means nothing to me, eg the letters or numbers, it came of an Austin Gipsy i used to own and when i sold it i transferd the number to my then car a rover sterling and have kept it ever since and is now worth three times more than the miggy  :o

The number on my CDX is the number 1 followed by three letters, these being my nans initials.

My grandparents bought it in 1972 for £350 incl the Vanden Plas Princess R it was on ( i have the advert and the old stamped road tax 'booklet'), they gave it to me for my 21st birthday.

Its been valued at well over £10k so is worth considerably more than the car its on!!

The plate on my MV6 is a "C" reg, with the last 3 letters VEG, this was because the guy i bought the car off was a Mr Griffiths, means nothing to me, but cant be bothered to pay the £80 to get the 'proper' one back

Please can you tell me what a private plate looks like, because they are all "ordinary" looking number plates, but on a different note, there was one in Oxford a long time ago which was "915 HOT" and the driver moved the letters around to read "9 IS HOT" and yes it was on a 911

Yer and, you will find that with the old reg numbers (X123 ABC), when the new plates came out in Aug / Sept lots of people had just one number, then some had two and so on, my bike had a single number back in 1984, but It wasn't a private plate, just a normal reg. You can get private plates in the States and Oz but not here they are all what Swansea have given out, not ones that you or I have made up.

If you want to be pedantic  ::) you have to go back to 82? when you last got an 'ordinary' number of less than 20 or 21 (can't remember exactly) cos since the number layout went from ABC 123A to A123 ABC Swansea kept hold of the single digit & *teen regs and all other nice to have regs. I also had a 5 character reg years ago that wasn't a 'private' regestration but if I still had it to sell Swansea would still be charging £80 for the 'cherished transfer'

The plate itself has no value and belongs to the car, so before agreeing to write the car off you could transfer the registration to certificate form at your local DVLA office - I'm sure the insurance wouldn't care less  ;)

I think so long as the car is still MOTd you can pay £80 I think and put it on a retainer which lasts for 12 months :y

The plate Belongs to the DVLA and you only own the right to use it on a specified car or keep it on a retainer for 12 months at a time,If you let the retainer lapse you will forfeit your right to use the number. >:(
It is best to transfer the number to another car. :y
swmbo has N15A  KX as her name is Anisa K**** shortened to NISA good plate for her ;D

VRM is property of DVLA - you only hire it for as long as you want it/pay for it....

Cost to transfer to another vehicle £80.

Cost to transfer to apper retencion cert £105.

All must be done before official ownership passes to any other interested party - ins company or scrap dealer - before vehicle papers pass through your hands.......

I wish I'd kept that reg number, but i just didn't have the money to transfer it, and it wasn't made as easy as it is today..

If you put the number into the vehicle checker in Autotrader it doesn't seem as though anyone else transfered it either.
