Title: Wishbone/lower arm
Post by: Risky Duckfeet on 04 May 2010, 19:37:09
Hi everyone.

My motor just failed its MOT, surprisingly just an offside lower suspension ball joint is worn.
Just got a couple of questions:
Does anyone know the part no. for a new lower arm?
Is the ball joint bolt on or riveted?
Has anyone got a new one that they would like to sell me or failing that can anyone tell me where to get one cheap?
Vauxhall quoted me £55+VAT for the ball joint and about £220 for the lower arm.
I drive a 99 3.0ltr MV6 pre facelift.
Cheers all yet again and kindest regards to all.
Kieren

Balljoints are riveted on to the wishbone, but can be replaced with bolt-on ones.  Drilling out of the rivets isn't too bad with the wishbone off the car, don't know if it's possible in-situ.
Relatively cheap on E-bay, £20-ish inc. nuts/bolts/delivery IIRC

Right, got one, thanks all. Tried to fit it last night and couldn't get a socket to fit on the clamp bolt on the hub. Does anyone know what size it is? I'm guessing 18mm as that is the only size that I don't have. How very annoying.

Yes I think it's 18mm. If replacing the whole arm, don't tighten the bolts through the bushes until the car is on the floor, ie with weight on the wheel so the bushes are in their normal position otherwise they will fail early!

To answer your question, these sets are very good, I have just bought my second set for my second Omega.
The only thing i would suggest is to spray the new wishbones with some sort of protection against the rain and dirt, they are painted, look good but there is no rust protection or underseal.
I sold my old miggy to a mate of mine, 2 years on he still has no problems with either wishbones stabilisers or tracking rods.
The only thing i didnt really like about your set is the fact that they dont give you 3 years garuntee.
