Title: Starting Problems - '98 TD
Post by: PhilP on 13 May 2010, 17:01:14
The engine has suddenly become difficult to start.  It's like there's no preheat.

Regardless, I've done the diesel magic trick but still no joy and I'm worried about burning out the starter motor.  Once it's warm there's no problem, even after 8 hours.  The battery has a 1000 cranking amps and is 6 months old.

I've done the paperclip test and the following codes are showing 49 & 96.  Is there a glowplug fuse or relay and what number socket is it under the bonnet?

Any help much appreciated.

Phil

49 is glow circuit malfunction
96 is egr solenoidvoltage low

first thing to check is the glow relay and the heater plugs themselves

could be a couple of things glowplugs or the relay in the box next to the battery.
try briefly(3seconds) touching the g/plug and num 1 with a direct suply from battery(positive) a long screwdriver helps.
If it starts from cold right away its the relay. :y

Get a set of glow plugs in it, only about £23 for a set of NGK.
