1998 3 litre,90,000 miles."A little more smoke than you would normally expect from the exhaust.3 ( so called) mechanics have looked at it and said possible head gasket". doesnt sound like haed gasket to me. Could this be the cheap valve stem seal issue ?

What colour smoke? Does it smell of anything? Anti-freeze/oil etc.? Are you losing anti-freeze/oil?
-
Its not my car Lee. Its a car on ebay I am communicating via message with the seller.Doesnt loose coolant or overheat. Im awaiting reply on the colour of the smoke.
My thinking is if it isnt loosing coolant then why would anyone suspect HG ?
Car still runs fine but smokes a bit from exhaust. :-/

Apparently the smoke is white, when first started, but then lessens when the engine warms up.
Sounds pretty normal to me :-/

I read this with interest, as my 2.6 is getting a bit of blue smoke on startup, I thought you'd have to get the heads off to do valve stems, how is that ever cheap? :-?

I meant cheap, as in VX used cheap stem seals for a while which is what causes the problem. ;)
DIY - wont cost that much, or if you arent confident have a chat with DLK. :y
-
Cheap valve stem oil seals were only used on the earlier 2.6 ;)

White smoke is water so could be HG waterway in to combustion chamber. It'll need a compression test to eliminate.

good points Pete and Lee. :y.........sudden change of plans means I wont be buying it now anyway. ::)
Possibly ! ::) :D
