Title: am i right in thinking this

that the 2.5 tractor is a diesel
and the 2.2 is not bmw

You are right... The 2.2dti 4cyl was an Isuzu Trooper 4x4 Engine if I remember correctly, and the 2.5Tdi was a BMW 6cyl used in the 325 and the Range Rover P38.

Not really, biggest fault would be fuel pump failure

Well unless your lucky enough to find a secondhand one with the right ident code your talking £500 - £1000 according to recent ebay adverts i've seen for new pumps.

Though if the car has been well serviced through it's life then it's far less likely to ever fail.

Due to the narrow band of power on a DTi it'd be dire with an autobox.
