Title: Help! MoT failure

The Omega failed it's MoT today. :o :o Bit surprising since it's only done 30k miles. The reason? Broken OSR coil spring and poor shocker on same wheel.

I guess it's probably come about through a pot hole experience.  >:(

So, what do I do?

I have a TC card, so I could buy the items over the counter at Vx and save a bit, but these are my questions:

1. Should I do both coil springs and shocks at the same time?

2. How much do the items cost?

3. How easy is it to DIY? I have coil spring compressors, but I have nowhere outside my house to do the job (sewer repairs!) and besides which, i don't really fancy doing it.

4. Should I buy the bits and get a local mechanic to fit?

IMHO you should NEVER only do one side of anything brake or suspension related. Its not a hard job, but you need at least 3 coil spring compressors to do it easily. should take you a maximum of 3 hours to do both sides, but remember you MUST put axle stands under the car even though you jack it up.

Relatively easy to do mate, and will save you over £100 possibly in a garage. If you really don't fancy it, I'm sure one of us on here (DLK???) would probably do it for you for a small consideration.

kyb springs from buypartsbuy or any factors
gm shocks with tc card
always replace suspension parts in pairs
guide in maintenance for springs, fairly easy.
shocks are easy job

just done mine on the rear and is a doddle to do.dont need spring compressers on the back once wheel and roll bar joint is off [13mm nut] they just pop out shocks are even easier undo all nuts top and bottom and a big hit to the base will see it all off!easy as that then simply put new ones on!not to messy either!should take about 2hours to do both sides!i was told to do both so i did!hth! :y

dont need compressors for the rear, they just lift out if you follow the guide plus unhook the exhaust.

Rear springs & shockers are dead easy. Shocker is only held with a nut in the boot & a nut & bolt across the bottom of it under the car.  :y

Thanks all.

I've ordered the genuine Vx parts and they'll be here on Friday.

I've mulled things over and, because I have no street parking at the moment, and thus it would be a real pain to do it myself, I took Mark's guide down to the mechanic at the MoT station and he read and said he'd charge £50- £60 to do the job...

So it's booked in on Monday (and I'll obviously pick it up with a new MoT).  :y :y
