Title: Voltage compatibility?
Post by: Tony H on 01 January 2008, 14:42:52
Hi all, firstly happy new year to everyone :y
A mate has just received a cd clock alarm he bought on the net, in the spec its from America and rated at 120V will this be ok to use on 240V? It does not have an inbuilt transformer.

If its rated at 120v, rather than 110 - 250v, then it will smoke pretty quickly

Can you buy plug in transformers that would make it usable?

Put a yellow 3 pin circular plug on it and use it on a building site...  they use a voltage seperated 110v transformer....  No way use it for 230v 50 hz...

Or BANG ::)

Yes, but probably more expensive than just replacing with a 240v version

A transformer would very likely work, but hard to find in the UK.  Might be easier to get a transformer from Europe and use a plug converter for the UK. That's what we did for the missus' US Nintendo DS.

Or, he could just buy one of these (http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/MAINS-VOLTAGE-CONVERTER-TRANSFORMER-UK-240V-to-USA-110V_W0QQitemZ260198310137QQihZ016QQcategoryZ96942QQssPageNameZWDVWQQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem).  :y

Even with a transformer to give it 120v, some clocks use the mains frequency as a timing reference so, because the US use 60Hz and we use 50 Hz, the clock will not keep time.

Those transformers work fine, I got one for a 200 disc CD player, and its OK, sits pluged in all the time, hasn't overheated yet.

A lot also use a 32,768KHz xtal instead of the mains, so you might be lucky !  :y

Agreed. Luck of the draw really, unless you open it up and look for a crystal.

They stopped doing that 10 years plus ago when the generating companies seriously reduced the accuracy of teh mains frequency resultsing in drift of upto 10 minutes a week!
