Title: New Years' first good deed?
Post by: Markjay on 01 January 2008, 03:55:45
We had a few friends over tonight. Went outside at 2am to throw away the rubbish. New-looking Honda stops next to me, inside are a well dressed middle-aged woman with a 10 years old boy. She opens the window and says she needed my help, she is stuck without petrol and wanted £4 to get her home. I have been approached before by beggars with made-up stories about bus-fairs etc, but she was well-dressed, well-spoken, and had a new car... plus I had pity on the kid. So I went inside, got £5 from my wallet and went back out and gave it to her.

Would there be a garage open? £4 seems an odd figure to ask for. Strange one that. :-/

Could be... maybe I've been had.. but she did look genuine... so at best I helped a damsel in distress, at worst I've lost a fiver...

And while I was out there I found a 2 Euro coin on my doorstep, so I cut my losses by £1.40!

No regrets  ;)

and all us negative grumpy sceptics will of course take our hats off to you when she arrives back with your £5 to prove you right.

Or even become your best pal when it turns out she is married to an oil rich Arab and drops a £1,000,000 cheque off to you  ;D :y

Well we can live in hope your good deed is repayed ..

I'll bet she used the money to fuel her addiction to heroin or booze.  ;D ;D

Good for you MarkJay. If there were more people like you, London would be a nicer place.  :y

It's a great feeling when you help someone in difficulty, but if you were in that woman's position in a genuine way, wouldn't you have at least suggested leaving credible contact info. I hate to say it, but I think she's managed to take advantage of your human kindness. I'd love to be proved wrong, though.
And if she does turn out to a fairy godmother in disguise, good luck to you.  :y

I had a simelar thing once.

A girl approached me in a train station car park, said she had run out of petrol, and was desperate to get home, could I spare a £10 so she could buy a can and some fuel.

"No problem" I told her, "I don't have any cash on me, but I have a petrol can in the boot of my car and I've got my debit card. I've got a while before my train leaves, so if you like, we'll walk to the garage over the road, and I'll fill the can for you, and pour it in your car?"

She just walked away from me - so I guessed she didn't need petrol after all!

Just to point out that your lass didn't actually have a car! Mine did, and new one at that....

The way I see it is this...:

a. A conman (or conwoman in this case) would have promised to return it and ask for address etc so make her plea sound more credible.

b. As she was obviously reasonably well-off (new Honda etc), she may have thought that £4, the original sum she asked for, is not something that I would be bothered about getting back? Or she could be of Gentry, meaning that peasants like me only exist in order to make life easier for His Lordship / Her Ladyship?

c. Perhaps there is a third option, she was neither a beggar nor a lady-in-need, instead she had a sporting bet that she could blag some money of a complete stranger on New Years eve?

Alas the truth shall never be known, as she was driving a Honda and therefore not likely to ever log-on to this forum.
