Ok , this is a strange on. My 3.0 MV6 Auto runs fine the majority of the time however It has red lined on the temp gauge twice. The first time was on a warm day, however when I switched off and allowed to cool it never did it again. However my partner has been out in it today and she says it has done it to her.
She has allowed it to cool and it has been fine. Just to be on the safe side I have ordered a new waterpump and thermostat as I was planning on changing the stat next week but thought I would move it forward a week.
Do you think this could just be a airlock or something else??
-
i would bet my money on a thermostat... it just jammed so it needs replacing. turning the car off does harm to it because once you shut the engine down the temperature rises because there is no air circulation and the water pump isn't circulating the water. on my old car when i had problems with overheating i turned on the ac and the fan worked continuously

Well she came to pick me up from work and had to drive with the heater on full heat otherwise it ran up in to the red after a while, but with it on heat it ran normally.
I drove it home and turned the heat up and down and yes it did climb each time the heater was on cold as if the engine was overheating. There is no coolant loss and the fans appeared to be on. Have now collected my waterpump and thermostat ready for changing tomorrow afternoon along with cam covers and powersteering pump oh and of course the 2 monthly oil change ::)
Im hoping it is just the stat as like I said theres no coolant loss at all, no oil in coolant and no water in oil and it only appears to overheat on hot days. When its cold its fine and Ive been on some pretty long journeys prior to this week so I would have expected it to show up by now.

If your stripping down to waterpump might as well go whole hog and do timing belt and tensioners at same time. :-/

Timing Belt and tensioners were done not so long ago and not due for quite some time

Well I spent 12 hours on the old girl yesterday and found the thermostst to be jamming and not opening fully.
Have replaced and hopefully cured the overheating just waiting for the correct power steering pump to arrive as they sent the wrong one then hopefully she will breath back into life.

Do the fans come on when it happens? If not, check relays and temp switches.

Yeah fans are kicking in fine, it just does it occasionally when its hot. If you redirect heat to cabin heaters then it cools down ok but as soon as you put it back on cool then it gets hotter and hotter.
Ive also replaced coolant switch.
