Title: Steering wheel wobble
Post by: Tonka. on 20 May 2010, 19:51:28
Got a bit of a steering wheel wobble  ;D ;D

It happens when braking at speed  50 - 60mph then all is calm below 40mph
At low speed the steering does not wobble at all.

What should be the most likely cause?

Maybe borrow one or ask a competent garage to do it for you!
I have a couple of them!  ::)

I would say discs also.

Mine was behaving in exactly the way you describe, especially worst when braking from say above 50mph.

My discs were absolutely shot, new discs and the car behaves perfectly now no matter what speed I brake at :y

Okay chaps, thanks  :y

If the discs are running true, where do we go then. Just thinking ahead for when I have the wheels off tomorrow  ;)

Loose wheel bearings are a possibility. Especially if the problem goes away once the brakes have had a chance to true up the wheel. I hope to have rectified a similar problem: Having checked the disks (twice) and only found a tiny amount of run-out I could not bring myself to replace them before dealing with a known bearing problem. I changed the bearing this morning and have not driven it yet so we shall see!

I would add my vote for the discs too, having been there myself. Make sure any replacements are genuine Vx parts though. Do not do what my Elite's previous owner did and fit pattern ones.   >:(

Yeah....I would put money on the cause being the discs. Best not to fit cheapo parts when it comes to brakes. I fitted EBC discs and pads earlier this year to mine, and all is well  :y

Check the disks as they are the most obvious culprit. But.... Check the wheel bearings too.  I was told my problem was disks by lots of people but the problem went away when I replaced the bearing hub and NOT the disks: Slight play in the bearing allows the wheel to wobble. This shows up as vibration on the steering wheel until the brake pads line it up again.
