Post by: osealy on 25 May 2010, 12:08:42
Hi, Mot (irish) Failure corroded brake pipes hoses rear nearside offside.
Are these a dealer part, are they easy to change?
Do any oofers make them Up.
Any advise appreciated, Car also needs wishbones F shocks leaking steering pump etc, Need to know cost of brake before commiting to other bits.

You can get a reel of copper brake tubing for about £10 and a flanging kit for a similar price and the connectors that you need for a few pence each...

They are fairly straight forward to make up, however, you will have enough tubing to experiment and practice a couple or three times before making the one that you need to make (remove the old one and use it as a template for shape and length)...

Fit the new one and bleed through...

I would clean the failed pipes up first, it may be just surface rust. If it is just surface rust coat them in grease or paint them and take it back for a retest ;)

Might be worth trying what Elite Pete said first as my Dad's Vectra failed on corroded brake ferrules so I wire brushed them and re-submitted it for MOT and it passed. See what they come up like first. If they are severely corroded then you will have to change them anyway. :y

I cleaned them up 2 years ago for its test after they were failed. I don't think I'll get away again.
The guy also said not to paint the new ones till after the retest>

I have had this with 90% of the cars I take for an MOT at MoTest just down the road from me so every year I now clean them up as above and they pass every time. they know you have to have them made up unless you can do it yourself and that takes time and it's easy money for them. :y
