Title: New oil - how long to change?
Post by: I_want_an_Omega on 29 May 2010, 12:11:41
I've changed the oil in my "new" '99 3.0. The stuff that came out was totally EVIL & obviously hadn't been changed for ages.

Have put new GM 10W/40 in and am wondering how long to leave it - basically acting as a flush before another oil/filter change soonish.

I'll probably take the sump pan off and clean that out as well, to get rid of as much old gunge as possible.

It won't be for a while yet as I've still got a few more jobs to do to her.

Thanks ........... Rob

A few hundred miles, 1000 tops.

Mine was the same when I got her...thick goo basically., She's had 3 oil changes in the last 4000 mls and after a month now, the oil STILL looks like its just been put in now.

Several short changes in a nutshell.

when i first started doing oil serving myself, i did 3 quick changes (1 every 500 miles) then slow stretched it out.

every 300 miles, for the next 1500 miles.

Then 3,000 miles intervals tops.

Ha ha, have only done 17 miles in the car since takng ownership a month ago!

Once I get the cam covers done I'll have to take her on a decent run

Take a look at the oil, several hundred between changes once you've changed it and found it clear ought to do it.

Mine's on short changes at the mo - but the top wasn't horrible but stained.  Up to temp and real oil now there is no mayo in sight in the filler neck and the car is still on short journeys as before.
