Really bad cracking noise as I open and close the drivers door - been gradually getting worse. Something to do with the hinge / stays but cant identify - have tried spray etc but sounds more than that. Any ideas?

there is a little plastic ring/gasket that sits in between the bracket no the chassis and hinge, cost about 10p! Not got part number to hand though
-
Part no 90462823 bushing
They cost me 27p each (one per door stay) from Pentagon VX last month

But it could also be the door skin ripping where the stay bolts to it. You can buy a reinforcing plate (or make one) to help, preferably before it rips out altogether.

Good point, depends how far its gone. Seen DTM weld some back in place, might be worth OP posting up a photo :y

:y Yep, try the plastic ring/bush. Mine would give an almighty crack. Changed the bush and the problem was solved.
VX mainstealer said it wouldn't cure it and I would need the £36.00 (plus VAT) 'door strap' kit. ::)

If you hadn't changed the little plastic washer they would be right !!! eventually the doorstrap bracket would have failed ... :(

It's not the check strap that's normally the fault though Nige, it's the part of the door it bolts to that fails/rips.

Top stuff guys - looks like one of these solutions will do the trick - will get back and let you know what the prob was.

Hey all - the washer was the culprit. 10 mins and a few pence and the drivers door sounds like new again!
Can't see any signs of damage to the old bit though! Oh well...

This is one of the few repairs even I can do myself......

i had this problem on my old vectra it turned out to be the door stay which snapped in the end from its weld it was a pain trying to keep door open after that just had to live with it :(

Hi, on similar topic, I shall be checking my washers, as the drivers door stay has totally ripped out !!! (whether due to washer probs, I'll never know.) :(
However, as I am left with a gaping hole (all the gummage was laying in the bottom of the door).... is this repairable. I am assuming the repair kit shown in links, is just to strengthen existing fixings.
Is a repair kit available to mend a total failure ???
Or is it a case of finding someone with the knowhow ????
Thanks in advance :y

My driver's door had ripped out the fixing for the door stay completely and has been temporarily/permanently ;) fixed with a reinforcing plate either side of the remnants of the door skin. failing that you need to weld more metal in or replacing the section of door that's failed ie ....

Hi Andy,
Thats a brilliant pic of plate :y....I assume by the 'numbers' thats a VX replacement part....again assume two needed, or is it a kit.
THAT is something within my capabilities, whereas welding is not. :y

The plate shown is the bit that's failed, and if you'd met the criteria at the time & Vauxhall had repaired your car, this is the plate they'd have removed from your car & re-welded in. I bought the plate with the possibility of welding it in my car, but the reiforcing plates were enough to 'fix' it. There is a part number for the reinforcing plates somewhere, probably in the guide & are far easier to use. You'd have to remove the door & drill spot welds out fit the pressing I've shown ....... :y

Great stuff mate, appreciated :y
Annoying thing...I spent many years in the engineering trade, and could have had my engineers/welders make any parts AND do it for free :( :(

if I still worked for Hall's Mentholyptus I'd have had access to all the gear and been able to do it myself. Hey ho :-/
