Title: Money well spent. Drives like new.
Post by: manny on 08 June 2010, 00:04:33
Today i spent 6 hours fitting new bilstein shocks front and rear with new Apex springs. They cost £293 from Euro car parts. I did hope to fit eibach springs but they was a bit costly. Anyway what a difference they have made, it drives on rails and feels really tight like a new car. Has dropped car by 40mm and looks really sweet. The tramlining that would not go away even with new wishbones, idler arm and drop links now seems to have gone :) Had no problems to speak of, well i tell a lie, getting the nuts off the top of the rear shocks was a ball ache, not the easy of places to get to when your big , but what made it hard was trying to hold top of shock with an adjustable to stop it spinning. The nut was tight so adjustable spanner kept slipping off. The old shocks were bad and car has only done 63k. They would push down with no resistance and one front and a rear would not return to the top of stroke. Just well pleased with the results. Next job will be rear donut bushes.

I will sleep like a baby tonight. The job is so much harder when your working off a trolley jack and stands. By the way, if anyone needs a set of MV6 springs there welcome. :y

for the sake of the tyre bill, was the camber to something approaching 1°10? Also wise to losen and re tighten wishbone bolts at the new ride hight to save the bushes.

I did reset the wishbones to the new ride hight. Undid the front bolt lowered the car to ground and re tightened bolt. As for the camber ive set it with an 8mm gap at top of wheel  with a big square from work. I  done it in work as in the work shop there are metal plates on the floor for fabricating. They are really flat so ideal for checking angles. I know its not perfect but tyres need changing soon so not too concerned, some thing to keep my eye on. The car is so much better to drive, all the pulling to one side and tramline problems are gone. Well chuffed.

would still recomend full geometric set up before the new tyres go on. 8 mill is still a bit to close ime. Mine is something aproaching 13 mill with standard 17 inch 03 wheels and stock shocks. Obviously depends on wheel size and shock body diameters for your vehichle. :y
